For friends of mine who are a very geeky couple, I want to get them a Mondaine Swiss Railway Clock for their wedding gift and have it engraved with their wedding date on the back. Can anyone suggest the best place in Basel where I could perhaps get the clock and the engraving done at one shop?
For the shop - I guess this would be your nearest SBB office/shop, no? Otherwise the same shops that sell Swiss Army Knives - they usually seem to have them...
Edit: Or online at the SBB shop of course...
A couple of possibilities:
Schweizer Heimatwerk in Zurich sell them in lots of different sizes. I just had a look at their website and they have a store in Basel too, but don't seem to sell them in their online store:
Schneidergasse 2
4051 Basel
Thanks guys for the info. I really didn't want to buy online, as I wanted to see it and hopefully have it engraved at the same time I purchased it.
I'll give the Schweizer Heimatwerk a shot, although I've been in the Basel shop a few times with guests and don't remember seeing any in there. (and they are so expensive!)
If anyone else has suggestions, please feel free to add them, I won't be getting it for a few weeks yet. Thanks
They definitely have them in the ticket office of Zurich HB and also at various shops at the airport (duty free and outside duty free).
This shop, Frey Uhren in Basel says it has 'Marken Vertretung' Mondaine/SBB. They say they do the engraving for free though, so you can guess what the prices are like.
They have one shop in Burgfeldenplatz , St.Johannsring 134-9 and another in the Steinenvorstadt 1, near Barfüsserplatz.
Here's another choice — they operate under two or more names and websites, all pointing to the same physical address:
Au Bijou GmbH
Rüdengasse 3
(vis-à-vis Hauptpost Freie Strasse)
4001 Basel
Unfortunately, I'm not going anywhere near Zurich (or flying, for that matter ) in the time before their wedding.
Ah, perfect, that's exactly what I was hoping for! Thank you!
Worth a look, thanks!
I don't consider Mondaine clocks to be geeky. Perhaps that makes me a geek
I think that they are a simple classic design. Hope you find a suitable shop to help you.
I agree, and love them myself. But it isn't a typical wedding gift
I really don't care if they're geeky or not (or who thinks so). I've got the watch, and I wear it proudly, and I've got the clock on my wall — which impresses my guests when they notice that my screen saver looks the same — and shows the same time(!).
Are the Mondaine wall clocks radio controlled - linked to an atomic clock?
