Not always -- depends on the holiday. Over the Fasnacht period in BS and BL, for example, many businesses took the Monday off while many retailers stayed open.
It may look odd to those coming from the UK or from small countries, but it's commonplace to have state- or region-specific holidays in larger countries, especially federated nations such as the USA, Australia, Germany, etc, where the federated entities like to believe they still have some autonomy -- or at least, identity.
There aren't enough holidays in this country in my opinion. Back in Saskatchewan, Canada we have 11 official holidays. The only month there isn't one is March. Maybe if the people worked a little harder during the week here they would get more holidays? Or is it because nothing is ever open here that working is pretty much considered to be riddled with mini holidays?
I just saw which school this is mygs29 from reading your intro.
Such a lovely house that is. Nice area too. I used to live in that now newly renovated red house next to your school.
Also, I forgot to mention not only is it a public holiday in Neuch tomorrow but its also a week off from school and many Neuchâtelois leave town to go ski somewhere.
Besides, at work, it is closed down but many come in for work anyway. Customer services can't be abandoned just like that you know.
Based on the Wiki list, you should get 10 days public holidays in Neuchâtel. Perhaps, a move to Lucerne, Solothurn or Ticino is called for. They all get 15 days.
Now I know why Lucerne is the top of my list for places to move to if I get the chance to move out there.
Yeah I think I'm just more upset that it feels like we get no holidays in school. Plus its an 8-5:30 school so it feels like a job. Not like it's a bad school just some strange ways of going about things. Never seen a place that needs 1:20 for lunch, kinda excessive!
Cmon, I have seen the place, been inside and all, know some of the profs, actually am married to one of the teaching course grads, hahaha. You don't do so much there! Party all the time, hang out at nearby Denner. But, it is true, they make you clean a lot. Like, completely sterile environment...
Ok, I am kidding. It's a beautiful building and what come out of the classroom are some pretty neat mechanisms.
I know. Just been through the calendar for Aargau holidays (I work in Aargau) and we have a total of 6 days that don't clash with a weekend. To make matters worse we've already used up the 1st Jan so only 5 days remaining . Oh and I've cancelled Christmas this year as well - Bah Humbug.
