More free newspapers

So another free newspaper has hit the stands today - " News " - backed by Tages Anzeiger. Flicked through it on the tram this morning, and it looked more or less the same as 20 minuten (and .ch) - my German isn't good enough to assess its bias/level of analysis - but presumably it'll be another light-hearted, advertising-driven freesheet for the mornings (with yet another sudoku to pass the time on the commute).

I'm sure the ZVV cleanup crew are delighted.

The question is, how many Sudoku's does it have?

That is the deal breaker for me

same same - but different

Both News and 20 Minuten are produced by Tamedia ( Tages-Anzeiger ). 20 Minuten has been a huge success for Tamedia as it's been rated Switzerland's most read daily paper beating out Blick. News has been created to fill the void that most free commuter papers in Switzerland lack, substance. Only time will tell if commuters prefer to read fluff or substance on the way to work in the morning.

The news last night had an interesting story related to these free newspapers. Apparently they're causing a big increase in the amount of trash finding its way into the public bins. So, the a few of the local governments are looking to slapping a tax on the papers to finance the increasing costs of rubbish collections.

There's definitely a bit more meat to the stories in News. For the first time, I was unable to finish reading a free paper on my 14 minute train ride today.

" I'm sure the ZVV cleanup crew are delighted."

... and the environment as well.

It anyway seems that the Swiss are obsessed by (wasting) paper (yeah, I know it's recycling paper and the Swiss boyscouts do a good job every four weeks on Saturday collecting all the paper bundles; still, there is a lot energy used for processing paper and transportation of all the newspapers).

Anyway this country is full of excessive papers...
