More insurance!

Good grief! I seem to be buying insurance for everything!

Any suggestions for essential cover for a small apartment? As in, what do I really need? And who would be a great provider?

Thanks so much!

Private third party liability insurance (Haftpflichversicherung). This will cover damages to other peoples property and bodily harm but non of your own stuff. This covers the biggest, most costly, and most unknown risk. Doesn't cost much and gives a coverage of several millions.

Content insurance (Hausratversicherung). This covers your own stuff but not other peoples stuff. The worst risk is known: All your belongings go up in smoke or are destroyed otherwise. If you can life with that you won't need it. Friend of mine says he has 20k worth of stuff so insurance would be a waste of money. And if the inevitable happens he could easily cover it out of pocket.

As an extra you can get theft coverage out side your home. The risk is once again known. What ever you schlepp around an could be knicked (some high value items might be excluded or need extra coverage). Depends on your financial situation if you can live with that and whish to cover this risk through a insurance or out of your own pocket.

Go with whoever you like. Axa, Zurich, Helvetia, Mobilar, etc. I like Mobiliar as they are no a big company and you get a reimbursements in low damage years.

Super! Thank you for that great advice.

I do this. I have a stack of insurances from the TCS. I was half hoping they would reject my wife's claim arising out 2 Covid related holiday cancellations so I could, motivated by a fit anger, cancel the whole lot, then be forced to review exactly what we need. The only one I'd probably keep is the classic Motorist Assistance, which is anyway double covered (at least I think so - but I'd have to read the policy in detail to be sure) because of something I get by virtue of having the car serviced at an official dealer.

Well, unfortunately, they paid up in full. So momentum will ensure that, for the time being, I take no action.
