Motorcycle import - specific question

I will be moving to Basel in a few months (from the US) and want to bring my BMW motorcycle with me. However, the previous owner removed the catalytic converter and I need to know if this will cause a problem with registering the bike there.

The specifics are:

2001 BMW R1150GS

88,000 miles

The rest of the bike is stock.

I can't seem to find specific information for this one question. If anyone local could look this up (or just share if you know), I would greatly appreciate it!

does your speedo have kms as well?

i know the 1150 quite well... have you got a replacement empty collector box or has it been cut open and welded?

bikes " in general" are not tested for emissions.

Yes, the instrument panel shows both

As for the missing part, I never looked at it closely, but it appears to be cut and re-welded. I do not have the original part (if I did, I'd just figure a way of putting it back on )

ok then your speedo is fine for the regulations here.

they will go over the bike quite carefully , have a good look and see if the collector looks " standard" if not get another in the US for the inspection

Curious, as you say "bikes 'in general' are not tested for emissions" but then you say "they will go over the bike quite carefully".

So I deduce that if it looks stock, then it might pass, but if it looks like some hack job, they can fail it. Sound right?

Ugh. I need some firm answers. I don't want to haul a bike all the way there only to find out that I can't register it

Basel is next door to Germany, you can get it brought to Swiss specification at a neutral workshop there,

The specs vary somewhat by canton, for example here and in some other cantons (Zurich, when I lived there) you are allowed to remove the blinkers.

The only OEM stuff that you MUST have here (Ticino) is the mufflers, brakes, and wheels, pretty much anything else passes no problem.

Question is, did the 2001 GS have cats in Switzerland or not?
