Are any Mövenpick customers here? I only ever buy the same two or three wines there but they don't give up and often send me their offerings Now I got a 20 Fr. voucher and consider buying a few bottles of something new or maybe a bit posh.
I'm open for all suggestions but particularly wonder:
- If they have a recommendable Chasselas or other Swiss white wine
- If you can recommend a Cabernet Sauvignon or a red wine made of several grape varieties
- If you like their desert wines other than Eiswein from Staatskellerei Zürich
Hi Nathu. I have bought wine from them, and been given plenty of bottles by Urs, the manager of the Zug store(well, swapped for Stilton etc) - one he was particularly fond of, and is fabulous.... but I can't remember the name of it! But I do remember that the grapes come from the highest vineyard, maybe in the world. Pretty sure it was Ticino but could have been somewhere else in the south of CH.
Also, I can highly recommend the wines from the Zürich State Winery . I met the two guys on this page at an event at the Kloten branch. I can't recommend a particular wine, they were all excellent.
If you go to the Kloten branch, ask for the manager Kurt and mention me. Mövenpick have excellent customer service anyway and usually have plenty of bottles open for tasting and the staff are all very knowledable and friendly. Say hello from me
Wow, thanks for the information, grumpy. I know two wines from the Zurich State Winery already and like them both I'll go to the Zürich Enge shop where the staff is friendly, too. Maybe I should ask them about the Ticino wine.
this is my personal recommendation, the Château Musar LTD Vallée de Beka'a for CHF 24. -- a most wonderful full and round bodied, strong but soft red wine
and another nice choice is
the Chianti Castiglione Frescobaldi of 2007 for only CHF 9.60
There is an interesting article on the vineyards in SwissInfo: Europe's highest vineyard spins heads . I was fascinated by a sidebar which lists several European vineyards higher than Visperterminen: Surely we cannot allow some irrelevant facts to interfere with celebrating that Europe's highest vineyard is in Switzerland
I was at the Mövenpick shop yesterday. Regrettably they don't have wine from Visperterminen. However I bought a Vallée de la Beka'a and a Castiglioni Chianti.
Yesterday was also a special occasion to open a bottle so I drank the Lebanese wine together with two friends and liked it very much. They however thought it was a bit too light but then they don't particularly like Cabernet Sauvignon in general. Mövenpick only sells the 2001 year so you probably don't store it for too long now if you buy some bottles.
When I asked for desert wines the Eiswein was recommended to me but I knew this one already. Given the choice between wines from Germany (Riesling), Hungary and southern France I chose the latter (Barsac - Sauternes) because the bottle was small and relatively chea... er, cute But I'll hardly open that bottle as long as it's hot outside.
Finally, the mission to find interesting Chasselas has been reassigned to Denner and Coop.
Thought I'd bump this as I was given a bottle of California Russia Valley Pinot Noir for Christmas by one of the Moevenpick stores and it was one of the best wines I have tasted in a long time, the other half agreed (it doesn't happen often). Very highly recommended!
The best place for buying wines in CH is www.cavebb.ch . They have the best prices for good and exclusive wines!!!!! sell from 500 CHF, but prices and assortiement are perfect.
After assembling my new BBQ i'm enjoying a glass of the Carmen Sauvignon Blanc from Mövenpick. Urs in the Zug store popped this in our bag when we orderd some other wines. I love Cloudy Bay and a cheaper version is Oyster Bay, but Carmen is great for the price.
