Moving a car from Zurich to Spain

Whilst looking for second hand cars here in Spain, I have been given the kind offer for a car from a family member that lives in Switzerland. It is a Honda Jazz with very low mileage (78k) and very well taken care of.

I am trying to understand if the paperwork and fees are worth collecting it as opposed to just buying a car over here.

Can someone please advise me on the bureaucratic process?

  1. I am aware that I must get export plates, and I can do that here: “Road Traffic Office Zurich-Albisgütli” for around 240 eur. I am also aware that when leaving Switzerland I must stop at the border and pay customs (T1 and EUR1). However, to do so, I must have a receipt/proof of purchase, which I won’t have since it is a gift. Is there a step I am missing here? Do I need my family member to somehow “sell” the vehicle to me and do some paperwork in the road traffic office in Switzerland?

Yes is the answer. All cars in Switzerland have an official paper they call a gray card, the person giving you car needs to send said paper back to the car office to let them know he has given it to you. There is no requirement to say if you paid him money, just that he handing the responsibility of the car over to you.
