Moving canton and rental agreement

Hello, I have a question regarding moving cantons. My current residency is with my ex husband in Vaud and would like to move address to a my friends place in Geneva. Do I need to ask a rental contract? I am only renting a room and will not be on the tenant agreement.

You will need to be able to put your name on the mailbox for post deliveries and the landlord must be informed, if that’s not your friend.

You could draw up a document about sub-letting the room with your friend and present that to the commune.

Also what Swiss permit type do you hold? Are you EU or non-EU? It makes a difference what you are allowed to do.

I’ve moved canton twice, once BS-OW, once OW-VS. In both cases we owned the property, but I’m pretty sure we were not asked to show on what basis we were living at the new address. I.e. no, they did not ask for a rental contract or equivalent.

(On C permit both times)

IIWY I’d probably just register in the new commune and wait for them to ask, if they need anything else.

I am American and have permit B (auprès de sa fille) and is going to expire early December. I am a bit confused where I should ask for a renewal. I’ve received papers from the commune but if I am changing address do I ask in Geneva?

Is it an open B or tied to your employer? If the latter then it’s expected that you will live in the same canton that your workplace is based in. If it’s tied then you would have to ask permission from both cantons to be able to move.

If it’s a family reunification permit it’s even more problematic as you only get your permit because you are married. You say ex-husband, but how ex? Just separated or are you divorcing? Because that will make a difference to what you can do too.
