Moving out of Apt, all by oneself ?

A friend of mine has to vacate his current apartment and leave the country.

He rented an unfurnished apt and now has furniture, kitchen utilities, utensils blah blah.

Whats the best way for him to stay till and leave on the last day in the apartment BUT also handover his apartment (as he rented/unfurnished) to the landlord.

We debated some ideas on how may be a friend to take out the last few bits of furniture needed for him to stay till the last day on the last day etc but is there a better way ? How do people do it when they cant take help from a close friend ?

You need to move everything to the new or a storage facility and keep a mattress on floor type of arrangement so that a cleaning company can clean.

Need to check contract but in Zurich I think officially need to give back by 12:00 noon day after contra t ends so that gives a bit of leeway.

I agree with the above comment.

I would keep everything VERY minimal and down to the bare essentials until the day your friend has to hand over the apartment. Maybe just an inflatable mattress and a few things in the kitchen. The apartment will need to be spotless for the handover to the new tenant, so your friend will need to keep everything very clean and easy to quickly remove so that he or she can vacate quickly and easily for the new tenant to move in. On the day of the handover, the new tenants will be expecting the apartment to be empty and spotless.

An inflatable mattress can be quickly deflated. We’ve used some for camping that only cost about 15 CHF that are surprisingly comfortable (but you do need to use a pump with them). This is the one we’ve used:

Go to a hotel for last few days maybe ?

He is with family - wife + a small kid so a hostel would be a no-no I am guessing , But i get the point to may be look for an alternate acco last few days

Are there any services which can dispose things off, clean for an handover too ? How expensive are those ?

For getting rid of things, there are dumps and recycling centers where he can drop things off and then pay according to weight (I believe). These centers often take large items, too. Clothing and shoes can be dumped for free in recycling bins for textiles. Those are located everywhere (most villages seem to have them). Anything electronic can be dumped at stores like OBI or MediaMarkt for free.

In our neighborhood (Greifensee), there is a recycling station where people can also dump anything made of metal (old pans, etc.) for free.

If there's time, he could also try listing things for free ("gratis") on tutti.ch to see if people will come pick them up. Furniture, etc.

If they do choose a hotel and will be flying when they leave, maybe finding a hotel close to the airport would make sense?

With a family and small child I would also suggest 3 nights in a hotel/Airbnb.

Handover day -2 dispose of items not needed

Handover day -1 clean apartment

Handover day - do handover

If small place maybe the disposal and clean can be done in 1.

Can't his wife and kid leave a weak earlier? Do they already have the new place arranged or what's the plan, just landing with suitcases at a distant airport...?

If it's good quality stuff, they should check with a nearby Brocky - some do collect stuff and take it away to resell, and the higher the quality the higher the chance they'll take it for free.

Are there charity shops here like in the UK, where you call them, they come and inspect your stuff (mostly furniture, but even smaller items), then they come and collect - basically take your stuff for free?
