Moving to Uitikon-Waldegg ZH ?

It is almost exact 11 years after the latest post about this question, well Lets hear if anything developed since 2008

My wife and I together with out little one seriously consider moving up in Uitikon-Waldegg

We both were quite city birds, but since it became a requirement to have more space, we started our search in ZH city.

After 1-2 rejections and saw each visit 30+ candidates , we changed our focus moving out to suburban areas, especially Uitikon-Waldegg & Birmensdorf region since it is closer to work.

We applied one and seems like we were selected, yay! contract still on its way to come.

It is a new building still under construction, moving date is in 2020. There is one year minimum rent terms which is okay for us. I hope we re not making a mistake for this radical change.. from Kreis 4 to suburban..

so anything to know about Uitikon-Waldegg, we already know about lower taxes and lower Health insurance rates (different zone than zh city) etc... Any english speaking young families? Thanks !!

Well, most people are quite rich up there.

Either inherited money or new money.

It is (or was at some point) the village in Kanton Zurich with the highest real-estate vacancy rate.

So, I'm not totally surprised you got in.

Hello there

We went today to visit and loved the area. It does feel very wealthy, but also in a natural setting, and great primary school. We are concerned we won't find accommodation for a family of 4. If anyone is looking to rent short or long time please let us know.

Is there an English speaking community in the village?

Thanks Lara

I guess there are a few expats there.

I don't live there, I live in Stallikon, down the hill if you want to say so.

There's always accommodation, the question is: how much are you willing to pay?

I don't follow the prices in Zurich-City - but I guess it's not much cheaper there, either?

My boss lives there (he owns, though).

Thank you. I didn't know about that website.

I passed by the recently opened Coop last week, just try to smell the demography a bit, I believe one of the best way to do so, i have heard many english speakers

You are right, it is more less the same prices,

Pross; definitely tax rates (i guess 82%), low health-insurance (which is 200 chf pm for our family case compare to City) and nature.

Cons; spend a bit more time and money on transport (delta +400chf pa)

I know Uitikon-Waldegg well as we have friends there and visit frequently.

It is the suburbs vs the city. The new COOP is ok, but only underground parking while the Migros across the street is more of a little village.

The tennis club and football club are both good places and convenient to all of the new buildings. Many people speak English - in fact, most people I have encountered speak English, as it is a wealthy suburb filled with Swiss and ex-pat professionals.

Still, it is the suburbs. If you go out at night, you will need a designated driver or an active Uber account. The bus service from Triemli is fairly regular.

All of the different Walds are great for hiking and biking. The pool is quite nice too. The sledding halfway up the Uetliberg will be fun for your kids when there is enough snow...

All in all, I would be very happy to live there, IF I wanted a suburban lifestyle.... but a suburban lifestyle is quite different than life in the city - even when Zurich is still so close....

I would just make sure you really are happy with the lifestyle you will be adopting when you move there... It is different. You drive a lot more than you do in the city... and there is a lot less walking....

All the best with it!
