moving to zug

will be moving to zug first of the year company working for is giving 4000 chf housing allowance for the two of us plus paying utilities car allowance of 1600 a month which can also be used towards auto ins plus an additional 5000 a month for cost of living increase food etc none of this includes regular salary does this seem plenty or would this be cutting things close

seems pretty good to me for 2 people, even for 2+..

assuming no kids (or perhaps one pre-kindergartner), that is about the "usual" package, at least in the aggregate. the housing allowance is probably a little light, but the car allowance is a little heavy. you might ask about a parking allowance, as well as a maintenance allowance for your US home if they are expecting you to keep it while you live in Switzerland (which they likely are, assuming you are tax-equalized).

the best advice I received was not to worry about the money, because candidly the hidden costs and expenses will far exceed anything your company will pay you. but the life-changing experience you can enjoy will be well worth whatever it costs you.

Depends what the salary is!

Welcome to the forum.

Depends what the salary is. Also how long are the extras paid for - you need to think about what you will be able to afford once they finish laying the extra allowances. It is difficult to move house here!

housing car and cost of living increase is for total time of stay

they will pay moving expense or if it going to cost as much to move it will reimburst the cost of item or items we buy

should be more than enough!

Zug is really nice, but it is hard to find an Apartment there.

I would have thought that 4000 chf would be enough to find a place without too much difficulty

What kind of housing are you hoping to find? If you are used to living in a single family home with the space and privacy common in Georgia, you might be in for a bit of a surprise.

If you are willing to live in a flat your allowance will get you a nice normal flat, but perhaps not a luxury one.

If you are expecting to find a single family house your allowance likely isn't enough for Zug. There are currently only 6 houses for rent in canton ZG under CHF 4000, including small row houses.

BTW, you could live in another canton (say, AG, LU, or parts of ZH where you will get more housing for your money, or possibly even SZ) and commute to Zug.

To give you an idea of what is available in various price ranges, look at homegate.ch.

Another thing you should factor into your calculations is the effect of your benefits on your US taxes. Is your employer 'grossing up' your allowance for US taxes?

It all depends on what you are looking for, what you are used to, what you are willing to compromise on.

SOunds like plenty to me. Worth noting that Zug is essentially a tax haven, and thus very expensive. As an american it is my understanding you will have pay additional american tax anyway ie make up the difference between the tax paid in Zug and Georgia. Therefore it it is worth considering moving to neighbouring cantons.

More than enough for a car, nice, modern 3 bedroom flat and living expenses. As someone else said if you want a house with a a garden there are few of those, especially in zug and you will need to look outside of zug and possibly canton zug. Did you say you have the help of a relocation consultant. I would use one as they are very helpful for finding accommodation, advising on locations and general info that is useful when you first move.

Also, Switzerland is a lovely place to live, however when you come in January the area around zug/Zurich will be shrouded in thick fog and will probably remain so for a few months. You don't get much of an idea of how pretty everywhere is and it can be a bit soul destroying when you first move but don't worry, it does clear and it is lovely!
