I have been admitted for the Master of Science in Finance at the University of Lausanne (Unil) and I would like to find some informations about the program, the level of difficulty, the exams, the opportunities to do an exchange abroad and how is living in Lausanne.
I am a little bit concerned about the difficulty of this master, since it has a financial engineering focus.
I have also been accepted at Neuchâtel University, but it seems to me that Lausanne is more recognized, so I think I will choose Lausanne. Which one would you choose?
Anybody who will attend the program from september? Or, anybody who has already studied in Lausanne or Neuchâtel?
I acrossed your post and wanted share with you. I am in master of neuchatel, finance but live in Lausanne. As u know, finance in Lausanne is financial engineering and it is financial analyst in Neuchatel. Financial engineering requires a lot of math. I have friends who are studying finance in Lausanne. Each week, they have to study many session related to mathmatics. If you have strong background in math, you should choose this. Or else, it will be very very hard for you. The class is often crowded with around 100 students.
The finance in Neuchatel also needs a lot of math, just for the first semester. But not as much as in Lausanne and not difficult as Lausanne. The class is around 40students in the 1st semester and 20 students after that. Coz they fail after the 1 st semester. However, you will get annoyed with some professors who are not loved by students so much ).
I give you some fact. My advice is you consider your aspiration to choose. You like analysis or engineering. It is the matter. Unil is very good, famous but not easy to study finance engineering. Lausanne is also a big city, more exciting things, more expensive. Neuchatel is a small one, cheaper but more boring
Note also that you’d have to live in the canton that the university is situated in, i.e. either Vaud or Neuchatel. hoahuongduong89 can get away with it because she’s already a resident here, you won’t be. So you couldn’t live in/near Lausanne and go to uni in Neuchatel or vice versa.
Thank you guys! I think I'll choose neuchatel, because I like more finance analysis than financial engineering, even if I think lausanne is more exciting than Neuchatel.
If anybody has any contact of a resident for students please let me know
This year I have the same choice like Anna-Maria the previous year. I think I will choose Neuchatel too because of the same reasons.
Despite of that, I'm a little bit afraid about French (I don't speak French, I can understand some topics, but anyway it's not something what I'm good at)) - could you please advise me, how crucial is it to speak French in Neuchatel? The town is small, I think many people should speak French only...
If possible, hoahuongduong89 and Anna Maria, could you share your experience about Neuchatel (incl.study) with me?
Hi guys, could you please share with your experience about neuchatel? I have applied to the MSc in Finance and still waiting for the response. Also, if you have time, please advise on the admission criteria for international students (how easy it is to get in and what's nor important for the committee ). Thank you for taking your time!
French is quite good to have in Neuch, and Swiss Romandie in general. English is much less spoken (outside the obvious Geneva and tourist areas).. I lived there for 2 years. PM me if you want more info. I knew someone who did the MSc Finance program at Unil and I tried Msc Finance at UniNe. Neither of us passed, I ultimately did Economics at UniNe. Good luck though to all who try
sorry for my late answer. If you still need some help, just send me a private message with your email and I will forward you some material about Unine.
Good luck with your studies. I hope that whichever place you choose works out for you.
When you've finished your MSc and are looking through your job opportunities, I'd humbly request that you fully think through the impacts on society of the job you eventually choose.
For example, the quants that engineered (admittedly at the behest of the banks' managers) the recent financial crisis by dicing and slicing Residential Mortgage Backed Securities have unquestionably made the world a much, much worse place for nearly everyone (happy to expand - please ask).
Please consider working for a small, smart firm where your models might be used properly - and even perhaps understood by the managers - e.g. a short only outfit.
I am considering applying for this course myself and would appreciate to get some feedback from those of you who joined it.
I am currently full employed in Basel and want to know the difficulty of the program in Neuchatel to see whether it would be possible to do it while continue working..
No idea, but consider which language will be easier for you to deal with day to day: French or German. Neuchatel is in the French speaking part of Switzerland while Winterthur is in the German speaking part. While your course may be in English day to day stuff will be in one of the other languages: rental contracts, food labels, insurances, etc. Do you have a preference?
In fact both 2 programs are two years English programs .I only know English and Arabic but It is easier to learn french as I know the basic.
My main goal as I am non EU is to find job after my master degree or to go for PHD that include employment so that I can apply for C permit . I don't know which option is better for me to reach this goal.
