Mushoom Identification

Can anyone please identify this mushroom type?

I found them growing on dead tree stumps of either Birch or Oak.

At first I thought it to be Chicken of the Woods, but that only grows on living trees.

As per my Fungi Identification Book, it's a Tiered Tooth, edible, but very rare.

It is porous, not gilled, underneath, smells fantastic.

The Section has a similar white hew throughout, the surface looks like it's got meltec parmesian on top...

Thanks in advance.

Paging Odile ...

Good luck identifying them!

No idea myself but do a search for "Pilzkontrolle" and your Kanton name and you may find a contact person to identify it for you. My Kanton used to have a Pilzkontrolle guy but they removed his salary from the budget. Maybe your's is still in business?

The general rule about "mushrooms" (Toadstools, Fungus etc.) is, if you don't see it for sale in a shop, treat it with great suspicion.

The other thing to do is to take it to an official check point for fungus (ger: Pilzkontrolle) for identification.

Where, incidentally, is Konwileggdorf (your given location) ?

Edit: Patxi types quicker than me.

Polyporus.

I think it is this one.

I wouldn't eat it, I just like to look at those.

I've seen some great looking fungus growing around the base of trees ..

Then thought - Ewww that's where dogs piss

Dryad's saddle has very marked darker scales on top, and little smell- grows on trees and is very tough. This is 'pied de mouton' - off to check latin and English name- back in a mo..

... name had slipped my mind- it is hedgehog fungus, or hydnum repandum - Google it, you can't go wrong on this one. We always scraped the 'needles' at the bottom with a sharp knife before slicing and cooking (in a little butter and olive oil - some people prefer to par boil for a minute or 2 first- I don't)- as the little 'needles' come off when tossing in the pan and make the dish look messy. Enjoy.

Brilliant Odile, thanks. Thanks to all for some great information and giving a response.

Too high for dog pee John H. However that would be good for my skin.
