Mushroom gathering

does anyone know how or where to find funky porcini?

ps: found this calender , doesnt say where though...

To gather mushrooms is one of the hobbies where it is helpful to know the local language. But there is much information available online that you can read and translate in all the time you need. Once you have made yourself familiar with the hobby, you could go to your nearest mushroom control post and ask for good gathering grounds or if they know somebody who is willing to take you with him on your first tour.

All important websites are linked at this English website , but prepare for the national languages after two clicks.

Or is "funky porcinis" slang for psychotropic mushrooms?

thanks for the link! there's a lot of good info there, already bookmarked it, might take a while to orientate myself...

a german friend showed me steinpilz/porcini while i was in germany, but we didnt really gather any, so i was hoping to get in on it this time since the season is almost upon us. except, i dunno where to find them...you gave me a great lead, i'll ask at the control, just so happens, got 1 right here in Baden. i'm trying to organise a gathering excursion with some friends from asia.

funky porcini is actually a DJ

Be careful about mushrooms. Some are poisonous and only the local people (who have been doing this) can tell you the difference.

If you miss eating mushrooms, you can go to Lian Hua Asian Shop

"i also like to live dangerously" said austin powers, as he put down his 5 points in blackjack

i've been bringing this topic up among my swiss friends, but no one has offered to bring me along with them

Nathu: do you know if these controls are typically located near gathering sites? cos i looked up the location, and there appears to be a big chunk of green where the control is.

First you have to invite your swiss friends to a chinese mushroom soup party.

Then they will know you like mushrooms, and maybe, just maybe they will invite you on their next mushroom hunting Sunday.

Why eat mushrooms? Did you know that they contain ZERO calories and so nutrients? A "waste" of time?

mushrooms are yummy! plus they are supposed to reduce cholesterol and prevent cancer. did i mention they're tasty?

but i don't think i'd make a good mushroom gatherer, i took a look here and can't really tell the poisonous from edible...

Rule of tongue....

if it tastes bitter, it is probably bad and poisonous.

then again, my chemistry teacher always told us,... "never put foreign object into your mouth to test..."

This did not stop Madonna, did it...?

good luck!

Thanks for bringing us back on topic

i think i'll just ask at the control, maybe they got some books ...

I assume so, also it is very recommended to let them test. I don't know where the mushrooms are or how many the average gatherer brings home. I know nobody who has this hobby.

It's more dangerous than playing Black Jack. According to the 2007 stats, there were 11 cases of moderate mushroom poisoning that required hospital treatment, and another two cases of heavy poisoning (liver failure and neural symptoms, both temporary luckily). Guess if their mushrooms were tested...

you just made me very nervous...

i'll remember to get them checked, thanks!

p/s: my housemate is a nurse though

I was at the Pilzkontrolle in Baden once. They were quite helpful.

As for good locations, you'll find that the best locations are a closely guarded secret.....

thanks for the link, funny i couldn't see it until i replied to the message.

indeed, local knowledge is key. i'd be glad, though, to just get in on some action and/or see the locals in action

ps: know any good locations?

I'm glad I'm not the only mushroom picker out here!! I used to do it every year back in the UK, ever since I was kiddie, but over the last few years, so many people have cottoned onto this hobby, that I only managed to come home with a small basket load, instead of three or four!

I too am interested in finding out where to go locally, and will check out the previously listed link. However, I am very particular about what kinds I pick. Of course I go for the Ceps and there are a few others that I only know by sight, that I know only grow in certain terrains, so I am interested to see what Switzerland has to offer!

Warning Nearly off topic:

Near Baden, along Mellingenstrasse towards Fislisbach, there is another " hobby ". Not sure near Fall or sooner.

Collecting live frogs and saving them from being crushed by cars or buses. I see some people with big baskets and gloves. Very serious business.

pity you're in montreux, otherwise i'd be happy to have company, esp that of an expert!

To your knowledge, have you tried that with a deadly poisonous mushroom?

Good advice. Pity Karl Scheele didn't follow it.

Yesterday I bought "Pocket Nature: Fungi" by Shelley Evans and Geoffrey Kibby. Not field tested yet, but it looks good, is in English and has a colour photo of every species.

Update: i can't seem to find any swiss people who gather mushroom. either that, or they dun want me to tag along

i contacted a the pilzverein in Zürich and Baden and they don't have any courses, but they did invite me to a "Pilzbestimmungsabend" which would be in german.

Also! i guess i'm gonna give it a try next week. if anyone would like to join me (details blow), just send me a pm. cheers!
