Well, morilles season is upon us- I went out yesterday to two of my dad's old haunts- but found NONE- still, flowers were great, I saw 2 chamois and 1 brown squirrel- and came across a badger sett- so it was fun all the same. Hope to find some soon...my stash is empty. St Georges mushrooms should be out in our field soon- so can't wait. Will have to dry more this time - last year we went away at the wrong time, and many went ot the worms and snails.
Just been up to the corner of our field- and the rain and thunder got the St Georges mushrooms (Tricholoma Gambosum) to decide to come early- quite a few showing up- will leave them for a few more days to grow than start picking- the 'circle' is about 2 m diameter- and we expect many basketfuls of those large, fleshy, delightfully smelling tasty 'shrooms The more you pick, the more they grow....
Still a-morel though, sadly...and such a busy week ahead that I'm not sure I'll have time to go and foray. I know several areas in the wild where to find St Georges' shrooms- but as we have our own one in the field, not been to look for years around my dad's old haunts. Happy to share the location of the one in the Valais (above Evolène/Les Haudères) if someone lives in the area- as I not likely to ever go there again.
Grrr they've done it again, changed the genum name, so here goes:
What altitude are you at? Most of my (dad's) 'coin' are at 1000m or more.
In the UK, my forays were at much lower altitude- and I regularly met old guys from Eastern Europe, mainly ex POW from Poland- Brits in those days didn't have a clue about wild mushrooms. First in Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common, then all over East Leicestershire. I only once found a few morels, in the Peak District- nobody could understand why I was sooo excited.
