Just put your first and last name Eg; Joe Bloggs. That way regardless of how the letter is addressed (Dr Bloggs, Mr Bloggs, j.Bloggs etc) it will be delivered.
Yes, it is arriving. I changed my apartment recently, and so I thought of having the Dr. title ahead of my name (to make me feel that all the years I have spent in the lab to earn a doctorate was worth the effort !! )
While it is an achievement, using titles is seen as being a bit pompous in Switzerland, and nobody really cares. If you were in Germany, it would matter. But here, unless you are a Dr.med., you won't get much of a positive response. Might make you more attractive to burglars though, as most people associate academic excellence with wealth.
In the German-speaking world, I have noticed that these titles and letters can sometimes produce better behaviour from others too.
I think this is a relatively small positive to offset the negatives though. It's a nice achievement, congratulations. . .etc. Leave it off the mailbox. Add the title to your credit/debit card if you really want something to show for the years of suffering.
My brother put his title in the phone book in the UK. Like me he has a PhD in physical chemistry. So, the classic joke finally happened: a woman in the final stages of labor rang up late one night asking for help.
Not only for wives of doctor (I did not know it was like this), other ladies with Dr. title also get letter with Frau Dr. XXX XXX. Men gets letter with Herr. Dr. XXX XXX. I think its normal practice in formal letter and emails.
I recall when I was working at WHO, the Chief of our Unit organized a cocktail party, to which he invited not only staff but spouses as well. My husband shook the medical doctor's hand and introduced himself using his first and surname. "Oh, is that Doctor or Mr" enquired the Chief. "Well, it's Doctor actually, but I'm only a physicist", came my husband's reply!
I completly understand. I got my bank cards and driving licence changed ASAP. But here I just have Firstname Surname on my postbox.
I don't so much mind being called Frau Bouw as here Frau has nothing to do with your marriage status, I hated it in the UK. 'Is tht miss or mrs?' 'Doctor actually'. I lways wtite Dr (or Frau Dr) on forms, and the postie knws I'm Dr, as it's on my mail. Plus my neighbours who know what I do know I'm Dr (wrking as a Post Doc s a bit obvious).
