Hi All, was wondering if there any members here who have gone through the naturalisation process in Gemeinde Baar, or in any other Gemeinde in Kanton Zug. Wanted to have an idea on the timeline and process, documents required etc. Interviews....

My request is more specific to Gemeinde Baar. As you know our Kanton isn't the biggest of Kantons in the country.

I pasted the same question in the other thread of Ordinary Naturalization. That thread although being super helpful, is heavy on cases about Zurich. Hence thought to paste here if someone can please be so kind to help regarding Baar / Kanton Zug.
Anyone here who did the process in Kanton ZUG. following is my timeline till now:
a) Submitted application - Oct. 2025
b) got Gemeinde invite - April 2026 ( exact 1 month notice for interview)
c) Gemeinde interview - May 2026 - they informed Katon guys will reach out to you in 6 to 8 weeks.
d) [Now] Summer, Sunshine, beer & Waiting for ZUG call…
Questions:
a) I have heard that Katons guys grill you on history, Culture, Geography and Politics. I am preparing but am little scared as well. German language is not a problem, but the data your have learn and make sense of is huge. Any experiences, tips and suggestions would be really appreciated.
b) I know there was a massive inflow of application end of 2024 when the law regarding language changed. Any clues if the process is still in overhang of that workload - and thereby likely to stretch my case?

We have literally just done the kanton interview. It is much tougher than it used to be. The new interviewer is very thorough (albeit fair) and likes to drill on every question.
The questions will range from politics, history, geography, and general (like what Swiss anthem is or what CH stands for). Expect to get anything between 40 - 60 questions (depending on how much he will drill each question).
Pay particular attention to understanding the works of politics: for example, he will make sure you understand how referendum process works, what do you do if you like to exercise your passives wahlrecht etc. He WILL ask you what you do if you want to change speed limit on the motorway from 120 to 150 km (referendum vs initiative, fakultatives vs obligatorisches etc). You will be asked what river flows through Bern, what is the hauptstadt of particular kanton, how many French, German or both speaking kantons there are etc . Definitions are not enough unfortunately. You will need to understand things. Similar with history. For example, you will be asked what happened in 1515, who fought who, who lost and why is it important for Switzerland.
As for the waiting times, it takes a bit longer to get the invite I think, since there is only one interviewer. The good news is it is doable (takes some learning for sure) and if for whatever reason you don’t make it, you will be given another opportunity couple of months later.

@TheExile - many thanks for your detailed reply. Really really helpful !!! One follow-up timeline wise, what was the rough time ( number of weeks) between your Gemeinde interview and Kantonal interview ? Many thanks again, and best wishes for summer.
@BaarBaby We had our Gemeinde interview on 15th January and Kanton end of March. However, we had to postpone it as we had other commitments on the proposed date. From what I hear from others also going through the process, it should be around 8 - 12 weeks between the two. All the best during your interview.

Hey @TheExile thanks for sharing your experience. Did you pay your SEM Rechnung ? I was wondering how much time it takes in Kanton Zug from SEM Rechnung to Passport ? I have Paid it a few months back but havent heard anything yet.

No, we haven’t got the SEM bill yet. However, it took about three months from SEM bill to SEM approval for our son who is over 18 and was treated separately: Jan 26 SEM bill - June 26 passport office appointment. If you’ve done your interviews and paid SEM bill you should be fine. I think the guys in Bern are swamped by applications and it may take a bit longer to process. From what I hear it’s hit and miss really: some of our friends had to wait just two three months, some much longer. Same gemeinde and kanton. Not sure why.

Thank you for a quick reply and providing the situation of your son. I have heard the same that Bern is swamped and takes up to 7 months. Fingers crossed for you and me
