So. I decided to downsize and plan to move out of my current place and to a new place. But I haven't decided where exactly to move.
The thing with Basel is that there are several cantons quite close to each other and I'm currently in BS.
Checking the calendar, I realise that I have a year before I'm qualified to apply for naturalization. If I move across the border to Basel-Land, I believe they have a 5 year residence requirement which means I have to wait longer.
I have a question: if i stay put for a year until i qualify and then apply and then immediately move out of BS to a neighbouring canton e.g. BL, SO. Does this invalidate my application? i.e. do I have to wait until my application is approved before I can move cantons (and do I need to wait for just the gemeinde/kanton approval or the federal one)?
If I have to wait, what is the typical time to approval at the canton level for BS (and Federal if I need to wait for that one before moving)?
As you’ve mentioned moving Kanton you’d need to stay in the Kanton until you get both the Kantonal and Gemeinde citizenships.
However as the Federal citizenship is applied for on your behalf by the Kanton with their recommendation, doing so would likely delay your grant but YMMV.
I got my Federal a mere month after the Kantonal so you might prefer to wait until done, and then you can move where you like.
In Kt. ZH it’s quite common for folks to move within the Kanton during the process once the Gemeinde citizenship is acquired (e.g. out of Zurich Stadt) but moving Kantons is a whole other Hierarchy.
In fact the new Kanton is likely to repeat a request for certain documents that have since expired since you originally applied like your residence history, credit file, criminal record, and proof of employment adding to the overall duration.
Does anyone have recent experience of BS naturalization. I know the time is dependent on canton and backlog so was wondering how the situation currently is. I expect Brexit may have stirred things up.
Not yet! But I hope to be able to apply in a few months, so I'm following this thread I just sent in my paperwork for my C Permit, after which I understand I can then apply for citizenship,
Phil, we should have a Naturalisation party once we've both been accepted
In the current nationality law (effective until 31.12.2017), you generally have to stay in the same canton until the end of ordinary naturalization process.
In the new law (effective from 01.01.2018), you are systematically allowed move to another canton during the ordinary naturalization process, once the cantonal level is done.
