Nearest French town from Lausanne for food shopping?

So the title says it all. I am wondering where the nearest French town is that has a supermarket or some sort from Lausanne and is accessible by public transport? I am not referring to Evian if it is the nearest as one has to cross the lake which is not covered by GA. So I reckon it might be near Nyon or probably up there near Orbe, Yverdon-les-bains?

Thanks for your infos. Would really love to have a change of food shopping for more choices...

Train to Geneva, tram and bus to Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, which is in France and has supermarkets.

But it's a bit far just to buy food...

Alternatively, train to Geneva, tram out towards Cern (14) and then a bus to Thoiry (Y).

There's a good Migros as well as a reasonable selection of shops inthe shopping centre there (H&M, La Halle vetements, Celio, Etam, etc.), plus other shops in the shopping area opposite the bus stop. It's rather a trek from Lausanne though just to buy the groceries!

Yes, out from Geneva is obvious, but I am actually looking for French places from Nyon or even Yverdon-les bains. From the map it seems to me Nyon is at the border with France too....anyone?

Seek and ye shall find ... Shopping centre in France across border from Lausanne .

The CGN website says that the GA is valid...

http://www.cgn.ch/eng/tarifs --> under: "suggestions to sail cheaper"

Thanks ... I was pretty sure that it is valid but was too lazy to look it up

Nyon’s not that near and doesn’t look to have any towns worth mentioning for shopping over its border area.

My guess would be Pontarlier, a little way past the border crossing at Vallorbe. It’s been a while since we went shopping there, but there was a big supermarket in the industrial area and also a Thieret frozen food place.

Shopping in France from Lausanne it not that easy, particularly if you want to go on public transport.

The closest town from Nyon is Divonne les Bains. It's cute. But not a lot in terms of shopping.

IIRC, there is a bus from Nyon to D-l-B but it will take about 50 minutes.

boat is free if you have the ga. we take it all the time only because- it's free!

Well, I have a Mobilis abo for all zones (means all area in canton Vaud) but not GA....

Pontarlier seems to be the nearest from Lausanne then, but still it is about 1h40min from Lausanne with a change in Neuchatel. Maybe the Geneva option is the nearest afterall....

All the large hypermarkets are on the outskirts of town in Pontarlier - but there is a market on Thursday and quite a good Spar supermarket in town centre.

If you go via Neuchatel - you then have to take TGV, or take train to Fleurier and then the bus to Pontarlier. Not the easiest of routes by public transport.

Thanks everyone for the answers! I really appreciate it. Seems it is really not easy to go for French food shopping from Lausanne then...

public transport makes it more difficult than a car. You need to change from the train to a tram/bus even walk a bit if the shop isn't near the bus stop...

Don't be daft, Evian IS the closest and easiest place to get to. It's 35 minutes away by boat, boats run once every 90 minutes from Lausanne and it's 16.50 CHF for a return ticket with the half price CFF/SBB card. I do it on a regular basis for my shopping!

You'll find a Fran'Prix small supermarket where Google Maps indicates that there was a Marché U, that's 5 minutes on foot from the harbour, and there's a Supermarché Casino 10 minutes from the harbour. Very reasonably priced, and for all kinds of other things there's a small pedestrian zone. Don't try Thonon as all the big supermarkets are on the outside of town and thus a long walk.

Pontarlier is far too far timewise from Lausanne using public transport, and crossing Geneva to get to Annemasse isn't exactly fun depending on the time of day.

P.S.: try asking people on the forum who live in Lausanne first, those out in the countryside or Zurich are rarely "au courant" of our rather advanced transport arrangements

Divonne is not far from Lausanne at all, and the Sunday market is great. You could take the train to Nyon and see if there is a bus from there. It has at least two supermarkets.

The hypermarket in Segny is better but it's hard to get there without a car.

Um... We are from Lausanne. The OP said they didn't want Evian so we gave him/her other suggestions. It's not our fault s/he doesn't want the easiest option.

It's not at all easy on public transportation. Actually I think you have to go all the way to Coppet to take the bus to D-l-B.
