Can anyone recommend a dental insurance that pays for wisdom teeth removal? I just found out that my teenage son needs to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed (they grow at a wrong angle, affecting nearby teeth). Our regular health insurance said it won't pay for it (since it's not an accident).
If anyone had a relevant experience with their kids/themselves and can recommend what insurance they used, would really appreciate it.
Many insurances do not cover it and especially not if you sign up already knowing this is needed - that is afterall how insurance makes their living, by people paying for a while before needing anything.
Do you at all have dental insurance now? That may put you at better chance of transferring but otherwise with a teenage potentially also needing braces it's going to be hard.
My son also needs his wisdom teeth removed. The dentist here quoted CHF6,000 if all goes "smoothly"!!! Despite it being bone treatment, the insurance will not cover it, only if it's life threatening. Seems not to matter if it's only painful!!
However, just over the border there is a very good dentist studio, and he wants just EUR 250 per tooth. Guess where we're going??
I had my wisdom teeth out as an adult. Horrible experience.
It’s not a job for a ‘one man band’ dentist, I’d recommend going to a large, modern facility where they have multiple dentists, one of which is dedicated to dental surgery, the latest equipment etc, and a high turnover of patients so they have plenty of current practice.
My last molar extraction, in just such a facility just over the border in DE, cost @€180, so chf1500 is crazy ( even despite a wisdom tooth being more complicated than a molar).
In the UK wisdom teeth extraction is classed as maxillo-facial surgery and not performed by dentists, but surgeons in a hospital (usually requires a GA which most dentists are not qualified for).
Yes, but it's a long way to travel and will need 2 visits, one for the work and one for the removal of stitches and check up. Como / Varese can be comfortably done in a day.
When my wife gets back I'll ask her and post it here.
Wisdom teeth are normally unlike usual molars - their roots are 'fused together', like a cone, so removing them is not as dramatic as molars which have 4 roots and they may be going in whichever direction. I have had mine removed years ago and I had no problems with healing. Sometimes it's useful to see x-ray image, then, together with the dentist, you will be able to make an educated and cost efficient solution.
6000 tuziks is very steep, even for Switzerland...
