Nespresso Capsule Recycling - What's in it for me?

So anyway, I got a phone call from some Nespresso guy speaking in tongues (I think it might have been Zurideutch*) about warranties and stuff and telling me to take my used capsules back to somewhere (dunno where, but it didn't sound like the Nespresso boutique) and I think a bag was mentioned.

Do I get a refund for said capsule, or is there any sane reason for not just binning the used capsules?

If I should take 'em back, then where and how?

He did try speaking slower for me, but to be honest, that was worse. Like a cross between a detuned TV and one of those industrial stone wash tumber things.

You put them in the bag and take them to the nearest boutique,waste tip or if you have your capsules delivered by courier give them to him. Personally I bin them and use the bag for my packed lunch .

You don't get anything out of it except a clear conscience. In fact, I think it costs an extra CHF for them to come and collect the bag.

The bags are only available through the mail order service (not in boutiques). They either pick them up (full) when they bring the next delivery (CHF1 charge) or you can take them to designated drop-off points, usually small shops (not Nespresso shops).

Fixed that for you.

I take mine to the temple, since it's quite close to work, and it means its not taking space up in the rubbish sacks I have to pay for, and it gets recycled, so my green soul is marginally greener. A few places other than the temples recycle them as well, but they don't give you a complementary coffee.

I get reading statements like this. Why does there need to be a carrot dangling in front of your face in order for you to move in the right direction? Haven't you ever seen Pay it Forward ffs?

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt of understanding that there are actual environmental and economic benefits associated with recycling. Are these not sane enough for you?

You can also drop the used capsules at local super markets. I noticed my local COOP has a collection point. Right next to the old batteries bin.

Actually, I was amazed that the consumer has to pay for this service. And despite that, people make the effort to recycle. It says a lot about the Swiss commitment to the environment.

Apparently, Switzerland is the only place where Nestle offers recycling of the Nespresso capsules -- and that decision was very much driven by local customer demand.

The amount of waste being produced from the Nespresso system (compared to my superautomatic machine, which only produces organic waste) was one of the main reasons I held off buying a Nespresso system for so long.

Even now, they don't make it as easy as it should be to recycle the capsules. For example, you can't pick up one of their recycling bags in-store. Only online.

To my mind, it says more about Nestle's and the Swiss approach to customer service...

The UK recycles them too. Same system (with the bags taken to nespresso stores).

Sorry to call you out, but not entirely true (although you did say "apparently")!

In Oz I recycled my capsules at the local Nespresso Boutique. I didn't need one of their recycling bags, just took them in a regular zip-lock bag that I kept under the sink until full, then tipped the bag into the dispenser at Nespresso when getting more capsules. They even had another bin for the plastic bags too if you wanted to dispose of them there. No fee whatsoever.

We brought our machine over here and I'm no where near a Nespresso store (that sells capsules anyway) so I buy them online. I've got one of the recycling bags from them, but still not sure what to do with it...

At the Duebendorf recycling center there is a huge bin for Nespresso capsules. They even have a bin in the Oekibus that comes through our villages on Thursday afternoons.

Here in Barca, every Nespresso store has a depot for recycling. I make it a duty to bring them back there as I feel it is important. I just wish it was easier to drop them closer.

I was once caught in the demilitarised zone between north and south Korea when what did I see? A Nespresso recycling centre. Same design as the one just photographed by Nasa's Curiosity rover.

Definitely not free!

From the website:

The new service costs a contribution of one Swiss Franc and allows for easy and convenient handling directly from home. When ordering coffee by telephone or via internet, the customer communicates to Nespresso that he would like to recycle his used coffee capsules, and activates the service Recycling at Home. He then receives a specially developed Nespresso recycling bag, in which the used aluminium capsules are collected. When placing the next coffee order, the customer requests the pick-up of the recycling bag. An SMS or e-mail from the Swiss Post, sent before the delivery of the new Nespresso Grands Crus, reminds the customer to place the recycling bag in the storage compartment of his letter-box. Thus, the postman can collect the used capsules even in the absence of the customer.

I don't order by phone or internet so this won't work for me.

But I admit that my "storage" system for empty capsules is not the best. I use empty Mövenpick ice cream containers. But when I open the container to dump the capsules, it's pretty disgusting inside. I generally buy my capsules at the Nestlé outlet in Spreitenbach and return the old ones there. (it's that building that looks like it is covered in tin foil ).

The 3 Rs : reduce, re-use, recycle

so not using Nespresso capsules in the first place is much better Our Senseo machine was a fraction of the cost, and all the coffee paper pods go straight into the compost

Even if half are being recycled that means over 3200 metric tons of aluminum is being sent to landfills annually.
