Neti Pot [nasal rinse aid]

I've been trying to find a neti pot here in Switzerland, but I'm having no luck. I've tried pharmacies and drogeries, and in both places I received strange looks for even asking.

Any idea where I could find one in Switzerland, or failing that, online that I could order? (I tried to order from the UK, but couldn't find a place to ship to Switzerland....)

If you don't know what one is:

You can find them from Yoga article stores. Also available online for something like 7 bucks.

Not a Neti pot but it does the same thing: Emser® Nasendusche

For the first uses, I recommend to use their salt mixture, especially if you haven't used nasal irrigation before. Then buy your own salt, and make sure that it is free from iodine and flouride (ouch!).

Jurasel sells it as Speisesalz.

I asked at my apothecke - just asked for Nasenspülung mit Salzwasser.

If everybody wasn't being so serious on this thread, I'd swear that this should be in the "WTF of the Day" thread.

Ok so I'm probably being very naive but do people really squirt water into their nose? is this a new thing I've missed?

Having experienced the uncomfortable feeling of water in my nose I think I would be inclined to stick with the tried and tested tissue paper and blowing method.

Good luck everybody.

i gotta agree with slaphead !

yea i know it looks like wtf!

but i will tell you it works to avoid getting sick, it really helps when you have that stuffy nose/can't breath feeling. but you don't have to buy a neti pot for it, although the shape is easier, of course. you can you anything you have at home in the meantime to try it out and see if it's for you- but definitely use warm (not hot!) with some salt, it will sting if not!

apparently works for clearing the ears if you squeeze hard enough

Since you live in Basel, would it be an option to have it sent to Germany ?

Simply write your name and the Address of the Post office in Weil am Rhein, and "Postlagernd", and you can pick it up at the post office.

Doc.

Why go through the hassle?

I bought one from here for about 10CHF, and received it in two days:

I gotta say that this is really great for clearing a cold. I think the salt mixture is important to keep in mind. But I don't think it matters if the salt is from the Himalayas or from Jura, unless you are superstitious. The Jura salt is just as good and a fraction of the cost.

Thank you all for the info!! The links were helpful, now I can finally order one. I had the flu a month ago and I'm still congested, and this was suggested to me by quite a few friends, so I'm willing to give it a shot.

Yes, I know it looks (and sounds) bizarre - but if it works, I'll deal with the oddness of it

As crazy as the idea seems, I agree that regular use of these things can go a long way towards minimizing and preventing colds and sinus infections. It's not just your nose, but your lower sinuses that get cleaned out (with warm, slightly salted water). The accumulated crud and microbes get routinely cleared out. I used to get sinus infections several times per year, and haven't had one in years, since I started using a neti pot.

I couldn't find a neti pot in time for the last hayfever season, so instead I rigged up a jug and some tubing. It was cumbersome but effective and it helped me stay free of congestion and irritation for the whole Summer.

Anyone wants to step up a notch? My grandpa used to rince his nose with urine from time to time, as a proper yogi... Ugh.

I use Prorhinel and it saves my butt during a cold, it's a great nose wash. I wouldn't do it too often, though, I wonder this irrigation help (even with neti) actually slowly kills the normal washing system in our body. Like things for dry eyes are questioned, too, for making eyes lazy with the tear production. Also, a doctor I know believes that pooring liquid into your nose too often can bring whatever bugs you have there into your ears (if you blow your nose hard afterwards) and lower airways.

I don't see it as much different than rinsing your face or hair with water. Especially when sinuses are "producing" abnormally (too little or too much), due to a high volume of microbes, an allergy, or other irritants.

Which brings out the extreme importance of properly drying out after the rinse, without which you could end up worse off than you started. There are breathing techniques for subsequently airing out your head (and avoiding blowback into your ears). Leaving water trapped in those passages can be dangerous.

Has anyone seen a Neti pot for sale anywhere in Zürich?

I used a jug and a tube last Summer to wash out my nostrils and it completely alleviated my hayfever.

Cup hand under tap. Wait for water to warm up a little. Snort. Pleasure and pain but no hayfever.

I'd tried that before resorting to a tube last year . . . I found just using a cupped hand a little ineffective and difficult. I'd rather not snort (both in this situation and generally in life).

Interesting. So this works to avail hayfever symptoms? Might have to give it a shot.
