New Job 90 Day Probation - Exiting before Start

Hello

I have been offered a job and I have accepted it.

I haven't started yet but I am having second thoughts.

A few questions.

Can I still decide not to start even though I have signed the contract.

If I don't like the job after day 1 can I leave ?

How much notice ( if any) should I give during probationary period ?

All info appreciated

Can I still decide not to start even though I have signed the contract. Yes, no idea if that has a financial impact.

If I don't like the job after day 1 can I leave ? Yes

How much notice ( if any) should I give during probationary period ? 7 days

The company won ́t be happy so notify them as soon as possible.

In the probationary period you are on a week's notice period so you can either turn up on your first day and hand in your notice or you can inform your employer right now to give them a fighting chance of filling your position as soon as possible.

Assume this is linked to your other thread about deciding to move back to the UK?

Lots of threads on this. Just let employer know asap.

Yes it is related.

Becuase they are desparate and under staffed for the next 2 months. I may just work 2 months and give 6 weeks notice after 1 month.

would this be bad for me ?

Your contract should describe the exit criteria for the probationary period. Many companies have a probationary period of 3 months where either side can terminate without cause. Check the contract and align to that.

If you do that it shouldnt impact you later, unless you find yourself applying to the same company again back in the UK (for example if it were are large Swiss bank). The company internally may have your hire period on record and not hire you again. This doesnt prevent you applying to others though of course.

These things happen during the probationary period.

You can pretty much terminate/be terminated even after the probationary period without cause - but probably with a longer notice.

You can always resign for XX personal reason, it's not like they will ask if you already knew before signing the contract. Or even that it was not a good fit on your side. Honestly, it's not uncommon that people leave during probationary period, it exists for a reason. The important thing is that you can justify it if a future employer asks why you left so soon.

I signed the contract and in the return email

I wrote 'As discussed 80% December/ January' then 50-60% February onwards

I have now receieved the schedule for December which has me working 24 days out of the 31 which is 77% if you calculate a working week as 7 days

but I assumed a working week is 5 days and 80% would be 18 days

They desparately need people for the next 2 months becuase a lot of employees have jumped ship in the last weeks so they are stuck.

That works out as all 5-day weeks plus one weekend.

What is the real reason you do not want the job? Or do you want it but just for 3 months? or?

Perfect time to ask for a payrise.

is it 80% in terms of hours or are the days always full time? maybe there was a communication problem and you could renegotiate (money maybe, if they are understaffed)

in any case if that is their situation and it's some kind of service industry job, I would guess they will be happy to have had you during the festivities even if you leave afterwards

The reason I don't want to do this job now is that it really disrupts childcare arrangements. When I applied for the Job I applied for a 60% position.

My understanding is that 60% is 3 days. So I could easily have managed to juggle my parental and study obligations.

Then I agreed with the boss for 80% December and january thinking 80% means 4 days out of 7

I signed the contract and recieved the schedule for December

It has me working 24 days out of 31

I did not realise that in this company a working week is 7 days not 5

80% means 5.6 days a week (working week = 7 days )

It all depends on the job, so yes, a working week can be more than 5 days. The hours per week are regulated though.

Thanks for the information.

I didn't consider that a working week could be longer that 5 days.

My bad ...

It maybe or maybe they just tell you to go an whistle too

yes you are totally right

IIRC at least one day off per week.

By my count this December has 21 workdays in CH, the 26th is a public holiday, an employer knows this. Looks like OP's employer is abroad.

Another very weird story.

quote from contract :

Schedule and Working Hours:

Working hours are non-standard, and include shift work, weekend work, holiday work, nights, and weekends.

Compensation and Benefits (Standard):

X CHF per hour / X per month full time (Grade A – 172 hours per month).

so 172 hours per month seems to indicate working week is 5 days a week not 7
