New Year Concert Vienna in English?

does anyone know if we can get the Vienna new year's concert in English and what channel? We are watching on SRF1 in German.

BBC2 are showing it, can you get that?

Thanks Medea Fleecestealer we just tried and we don't have it on TV but my husband found BBC2 on his phone via Zattoo TV so it's great to hear English commentary

PS. We really enjoyed the Salzburg segment

,

If you have a Smart TV you can download and use the Zattoo app. in order to watch on the big screen.

(although I can only 100% confirm this for Samsung smart tv's, but should be the same for other brands).

The concert is my highlight of the holidays. I love to watch it each year. Nice to see the Vienna Boys Choir taking part this year and also the scenes of the Danube. BBC2 always show the second half of the concert so remember it for next year!

@Medea Fleecestealer:Thank you very much. Yes the Blue Danube and ballet segments were also very beautiful.

@TiMow: Unfortunately we don't have a smart TV at the moment, but that's good to know that those are capable of downloading apps like Zattoo, we'll keep an eye out for a Samsung in the future.

If your TV has a HDMI port and a USB port (or nearby free electric socket, if no USB), then, for about CHF 50, you can buy a Chromecast plug-in (HDMI) dongle and cast (send) Zattoo TV programs from a smartphone or tablet (also works for YT and Netflix), using your home wifi network. It needs power from either a USB port or socket (with included adapter).

I'm not sure why you need to watch the concert in English. We watched it on ORF and frankly (and thankfully) there was very little in the way of verbal presentation. Isn't the object just to listen to the music?

Yes our TV has HDMI support. Ah yes, Chromecast is kind of the google version of Apple TV right?

I've heard about it for a while, you can run apps like Zattoo on it? Sounds like it's worth looking into.

Thanks for the tips.

hi,

Apple tv/Amazon Fire TV/Roku work differently from the way Chromecast works. With Chromecast you use your phone as the remote. First you open the app e.g. Netflix, Google Music etc that you want to show on your tv and then you select the Chromecast to display the output of the application. Now the chromecast dongle connects directly to the content and it is displayed on the screen. It is not mirroring your smartphone screen.

With the other devices they are streamers that stream content to your tv and come with their own remote controls.

have fun

Martin

So is the music different on an English channel

Yes for me too I've been watching it since I was small every single year, no matter where I lived: South Africa, UK, NYC, LA and now Switzerland so cheers to the 2016 ~

@catandmouse and @k_and_e yes on January 1, 2016 at 11:15am it became my first "1st World Problem" of the year and I came to the English Oasis to find a solution and very glad that Medea Fleecestealer came to my rescue

~ love ~

Hi Martin. Thanks for the info. Can you download apps or are they pre-installed? Apple TV for instance doesn't just have the ability to mirror phone/tablet, it also has pre-installed apps that connect directly via the internet such as netflix, itunes etc.

Chromecast doesn't have any pre-installed apps. - it plays from the apps. on your phone or tab, although not all apps. are compatible with Chromecast.

See link for those that are: https://www.google.com/intl/en_us/ch...chromecast.com

As the above link is a .com general link, some apps. may not work using a Swiss IP address, and a VPN or DNS service would be required.

However, when you use a VPN on an individual gadget, you're using a different IP address to your home network, so casting wont work. You would need to set up VPN/DNS on your router.

EDIT: Here's Swiss Chromecast link, which may be more applicable: http://www.google.ch/chrome/devices/...cast/apps.html

I also use Widi (Wireless Display)/Miracast for my windows phone (due to political BS between M$ and Google, the phone is not Chromecast usable). This is a direct mirroring of the phone screen on the TV and doesn't need or use home wifi network, so gets round any VPN casting issues.

I originally bought a dongle - Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, for about 50 chufs from Digitec (other/cheaper brands are available from Amazon), but both my main TV and beamer have pre-installed Miracast compatible software, negating the need for the dongle.

With Miracast, the picture quality is sometimes not as good as with Chromecast and there can also be occasional freezing and jumping, but usually not a major issue.

Occurs a bit more with some of my dodgy apps., especially on my beamer in the cellar, where a PL adapter is used for wifi, which weakens the signal.

Info. for using Miracast with Android: http://www.cnet.com/how-to/miracast-...oring-android/

Wow thank you for all the info!

I read through all the links. miracast sounds pretty amazing, does anyone know where it is available in switzerland?

Miracast is software built in to most android devices with 4.2 or higher. New TV's should have it and some streaming sticks support it like Roku, so it's not a question of availability in a region, just a question of what device you have. WiDi is the same, it runs on Windows 8.1 or higher.

Personally I have a Chromecast stick because once your phone's app has told it what to stream you can use your phone like normal or even switch it off, the Chromecast will continue to stream until you tell it otherwise with your phone again.

For TVs that dont support it like older models, what would you suggest is the most cost effective way to make this work? Like you mention streaming sticks?

Thanks

I can obviously only tell you my experiences with Chromecast. The stick costs around 45 - 50 chf. All the apps I have which support Chromecast are free, youtube, spotify (without download), zattoo tv, teleboy flipps HD, music player.

I have Showbox movie app as well which is not in the play store but can be downloaded to your phone from the internet. It has lots of new films and series including Spectre, Creed and more. I've had this a couple of years problem free. To stream their films to the TV I use an app called local cast.

Netflix also supports Chromecast but requires a subscription.

I guess what's important is a reasonable internet speed - I have 20Mbs with Sunrise and it works fault free.

My only cost was the Chromecast stick itself so far but I am a bit of a tight wad!

Check what apps are available by searching Google. You can see which apps are compatible with android and iphone.
