Newborn baby insurance : advice needed

we are expecting a baby in few days and most probably will leave switzerland in next 6 months..

should we go for the just basic one or should we take some complimentary ..

please advice

thanks and regards

Does basic cover baby wellness checks and immunizations? Baby will need about 3 wellness checks before 6 months and 3 pair of immunizations and seeing it will be winter maybe 2 visits because of sniffles.

Do full. You never know whether your baby will have problems or not until birth. Hopefully not. But if something is wrong then you'll pay a lot.

Also, get it set up now ; BEFORE the birth. That way you have cover from point of birth, including if it arrives early.

Good luck.

No need to do it before, you are always covered from the moment of birth, even if you make the insurance after. In fact, they will bill you for the whole month, even if you are born in the evening of the last day of the month (as was the case with my daughter).

Tom

You MUST get cover before the birth! This is most important! Ask your insurance company.

It is very cheap, get the supplementary as well, you can always cancel it next year! The premiums start on the day the baby is born, not before.

If there are problems at the birth the baby has been born and is not insured! Also the government invalidity insurance will not pay up if you have no health insurance.

When you leave Switzerland the insurance stops automatically when you resign from your town.

Sorry, but that is wrong.

Health insurance is obligatory here, and you have it immediately upon birth, same as you do immediately that you move here, regardless of when you actually obtain it!

Tom

Maybe your information is old Tom. I am not going to argue any longer.

Basic insurance automatic

Supp insurance is not automatic, if there is complications you may not get supp. insurance ever.

If you get it before hand you can have it for life.

it is not necessary to get it in advance ..hospital also gives u three months but u start to pay from the date of birth of the baby..

but yes the insurance company does give you few benefits if you get it in advance ..as in our case the basic insurance is some 80 chf and complimentaire extra is 108 chf..but if we take it now and we take complimentaire extra we get one month for free then only 74 chf for next 5 months and then 108 chf for next 18 years...

i just wanted to know what is best for a new born

Sorry, I just don't get the question - Tom's information/feedback is wrong.

I think Simon's post (as well as Ittigen's and mine) is pretty clear - no? Best to get full in advance. (& I believe Simon works in the insurance industry.)

We know of friends who've just had a baby with abnormalities - they were planning on only being here for the birth and then moving back to where they are planning to live (they are Swiss).

Turns out their plans have been put on hold.

Now you say you are only going to be here for 6 months at most, well, pay full as that is "best". If you are only here for a few months then it is no great shakes. If there is a problem, then you are covered. Better that way round than the other.

I suggest that you contact Jenny for an expert opinion.

i think carlos is right and as such we are getting complimentaire extra for the price of basic for 6 months..

In what way?

That's how it worked for my kids, so I am ONLY speaking from personal experience!

Or maybe that's just the way things work in Ticino.

Tom

Our baby is due this month. Following Jenny's advice, I set up the insurance policy more than three months ago. Once all the papers were signed, the insurance company sent us a little card that says in German the equivalent of, "I'm here!" with all the policy numbers etc on it. We take this with us to the hospital and when the baby is born we fill in the DOB, name and a few other details and drop it in the mail. Organizing insurance policies in advance is something the insurance companies are definitely set up to do. While it is not required, there are benefits that Jenny pointed out to me - particularly something about if the child has any complications or problems. Personally, I found it useful to know what the premiums would be ahead of time while determining how much maternity leave I would take.

But, all that aside, is setting up an insurance policy something you want to be dealing with as you adjust to life with your newborn bundle of love? I wanted it all done ahead of time so I could focus on that baby!!

Contact Jenny without further delay. She can give you the best answer of anyone, so quit wondering and go straight to her!!!

i agree fully..i am of the same opinion...we are already done with all the documentation for the baby birth certificate and permit and passport etc... infact we have submitted all the documents in the hospital too in advance..this is the only thing which got delayed because i left it on my husband ..

we must do this today..thanks to all

The skinny is this:

If you have a child born which has significant issues and you have not established your insurance beforehand, it may be that additional cover is rejected by the insurer. If the child has some heart condition that must be treated, for example, supplemental cover would be very worthwhile.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but it seems the issue that the OP had has been resolved...

We are expecting number 2 - due date is December 22nd - but I want to change our health insurance (currently on what feels like a very expensive policy with Swica). I know I can only change at the end of the year and so need to get it arranged in December, but I just heard that insurance companies don't accept new people who are expecting a baby - can this be true? Seems a strange business model to me...

I know I should just Jenny, etc - and I will go to an insurance broker soon, but I want to educate myself with the wise minds of the forum first..

You probably need to get moving now. Most insurances have a 3 month notice period which means you'd have to give notice at the end of this month for a change at the end of Dec. If you miss it, you will probably be locked into another 12 months.
