Nickname for the Swiss people??

Hi all,

Does anyone know the generally accepted nickname for the Swiss people?

New Zealanders proud themselves as Kiwis

Australians say they are Aussies (Ozzies)

Americans are Yanks

British are Poms

but how about the Swiss ??

(this will be fun given there are four languages in Switzerland !)

Cheers,

Ed

Blessed are the Cheese makers.

My GF is a Kaeser though, so I tell her this all the time.

Kaesers....mmmmm............that will do

Thanks!

ps Very funny snapshot from Life of Brian !

Speaking of which, John Cleese's real name is John Cheese. Whenever he books into hotels he uses his real name in the local language. Herr Kaeser, Monsieur Fromage, Mijnheer Kaas etc

Well whatever it is it must be translated in all 4 official langues, make sense in each and be neutral. Bon chance

POMs are only POMs to the Aussies, I think to the Yanks we are sometimes referred to as Limeys?

The Brits(and probably no one else) refer to the French as Frogs and the Germans as Krauts but the Swiss are just Swiss , maybe neighbouring countries to CH have local nicknames for the Swiss.

LMAO. Good one

This American is never a Yank. That is an extremely derogatory

comment for someone in the northeast of the US.

Well, I'm a New Yorker and wouldn't regard being called "Yank" as insulting as, say, Ameridork or Kmart Cowboy.

Just sayin'

It is extremely insulting for someone from the South.

It probably became deragatory after the War of Northern

Agression.

You could say "Bünzli" but that's only for a select (narrow minded) few.

Which ended in 1865. Shouldn't we bury that hatchet already?

The Germans do indeed label all Americans as Yankees, I reckon they don't know the difference between blue and grey.

We were affectionately known as "Amis" for a long time. Now, I am

not so sure.

I know no nicknames for the Swiss, a derogatory German word is cow-Swiss (Kuhschweizer). There are however some nicknames and insults for cantons and language regions.

Why don't you post an introduction, orange kiwi (isn't that a contradiction?)

How about Chlocs for the Swiss? (A combo of clocks and chocs.)

Or Hobbits? (Seeing as their pastimes are gentle, lovely things like Alphorn playing, yodelling and mountain walkabouts.)

No, no, not clocks! Watches you could argue but the Cuckoo Clocks seen in every tourist shop are just that. BAVARIA is the home of the cuckoo clock and nearly every proper cuckoo clock (ie not plastic and made in Taiwan) has it's workings made there! A misnomer, I'm afraid!

Ref Yanks - that is a term we English use for all Americans. Yes it is inaccurate - the Yanks were the North - ans so yes it is insulting to some Americans. That said, it is SUPPOSED to be insulting. Likewise Poms, Limeys, Krauts, Frogs etc are all insulting terms.

Ref Swiss I don't know of any terms for them. Gummihalz is their insulting nick name for the Germans, mind!
