Nightclubs in Zurich...and beyond

Is this a serious question?

Clubs are minimum 18 y/o entry, same as in all European-area countries I've been to. Besides... do you really want your 16-year old (child) going out clubbing and getting wasted with a group of 20-25 year olds? My parents were liberal, but even they would have drawn the line at that.

18 is normally the limit, sometimes 21.

And nightclubs in Switzerland are strip joints.

Yes, it is a serious question. My gut screams "ABSOLUTELY NOT!", but I thought I'd do some research just in case I was completely off base. After all, I'm old and don't know anything . It is true, though, that I know nothing about nightclubs. Have never been to one in my life.

No. It's not that kind of group. They are a quiet bunch. Mostly they like to go to the movies or have coffee or dinner together, that type of thing. I'm okay with my son joining them for those activities. (Why they allow a 16 year old to hang out with them is beyond me, but there you have it.)

Perfect. That is all I needed to know. Thanks for the info.

What?!!! Are you kidding me? Well, that certainly clinches it.

What the group is doing tonight is going out to listen to some music, hang out, maybe dance. Is that not a nightclub? Is there another name for it?

There are a few clubs for under 18 year olds:

The X-TRA at Limmatplatz is open to youngster from 16 upwards for events EVERY SATURDAY!

Sure they would, as long as he doesn't look too fresh faced

In Switzerland (and least up north and down here, don't know about the French part), anything with "Nightclub" in the name (or as category in the phone directory) is a strip joint (and possibly/probably brothel).

Here's an example form www.local.ch:

Night-Club Galaxy

Bar.Restaurant.Dancing, nightclub.Escort service

Dorfstrasse 35

8630 Rüti ZH

Note the "Escort service".

Tom thanks for the education, I was not aware of that.

Repeating mf holly question, would one then use the expression clubbing at night time or something else?

One would not use a different expression, simply because one would have to be a complete numbskull not to understand the meaning of this very common English term when used in the context of this thread.

I just had a look on the site and saw both these, dancehall

has anyone ever been to either? or even just to the venue?

Ok, WunderBar is really small (kind of a community center), cheap entry and drinks. You'll never know what sound they are playing.

Plaza is totally different. Bigger Club, nice interior etc.

Defo go for Plaza.

Härterei had good dancehall and reggae nights but will only reopen in September.

Plaza is great. Nice sound system and nice interior. Unfortunately, the girls are from Zurich so expect to go home alone.

by reading through here i noticed somebody declaring hardbrücke as 'passé'? wtf? helsinki is one of the best live music clubs, hive has a fab bill nearly every weekend and to warmup at gerolds... just fab. yeah, go niederdorf ya'll, haha!

I saw a friend's metal band at the Plaza. Nice intimate place to rock with a live band. Good connection between performer and audience. Its a venue that changes from night to night. One night cha-cha, the next night burlesque, etc The beer was alright, and it didn't seem ridiculously expensive. Although I snuck in and didn't pay entrance.

also i want to add kauz, a spin-off from zukunft guys

then there is klubi, the most indie club in town. more alternative

aint possible.

already pointed out to that. tagi review is not going to happen, haha! bollocks.

next to impossible because such crude mix of music played in one place i have never heard of. maybe in agglokingen? but id try mascotte, jade, amber or kaufleuten. but i have read that kauf wants to relaunch and kick out the kids... oh, is amber open yet? saw it getting renovated.

Rimini is a great spot which is located right by the Letten River -- swim during the day..dry up and get clubbing thereafter

its not located by the Letten area as this river is called Limmat. its a ditch fed by the lake that leads into the Sihl. also swimming is during the day only allowed for men ( http://www.badi-info.ch/zh/schanzengraben.html ). the bath is no good for "clubbing" its a bar as there are no gigs/sets, no dancefloor available.
