Nikon D3100 mirror jammed

Before I head of back to Media Markt, I was wondering if any of you photographic types know of a simple fix for a problem on my brand new Nikon D3100.

I wanted to take some photos at the Ballon Festival in Chateua d'Oex yesterday, but I got a message along the lines of "Error! Press shutter button and release" on the LCD and couldn't take any photos. I removed the lens and the mirror seems to be stuck, it just moves slightly in place when I press the shutter button. I had a look online and this seems to be not an uncommon problem on Nikons. Any ideas? I only bought it 2 weeks ago .

..and I thought I had no life.

(no idea on the camera..sorry)

Watch it sonny. It was a particularly stunning day, actually. Of course you don't get delights in the cultural wasteland that is Olten.

..what are you talking about. They call Olten the vegas of Switzerland.

Also, I'm kinda questioning the authenticity of your posts. What kind of balloons are you taking pictures of?

Send it back on warranty. It's not a normal thing to happen with a new digicam. Even if you find a way to get it unjammed, you wouldn't want this problem to come back after the warranty period, would you?

I rest my case, m'lud.

Big, bouncy, ones. Full of hot air. You'd be right at home

woehoew i am not the only one..

I wanted to go to the balloon festival but misses her parents had their minds set on the "rheinfall".. yes nice but colored balloons are nicer.

Anyway went over , found out my Olympus cam doesn't work anymore..similar problem with mirror, doesn't focus anymore etc..

Paddy , you are lucky as you bought yours in CH, mine was bought 8 months ago in Ireland,so now hoping that Olympus CH will take the cam in under warrantee and fix it for me..

Let us know how it went.. sorry i can't help but i would send yours also back to Media Markt..

Yeah what ever happens in Olten stays in Olten..been there, done that ,never again (Olten, not Lib)

Are you guys multiplying or something?

Yes we are secretly spastic and love bright coloring, put that on something that flies by and you can't stop us..

Back to media markt with it. If the mirror is jammed it's not something you want to be fiddling with as it needs to be properly aligned for the phase detect autofocus to work.

Mirror jamming is not that common on any brand of dSLR, but as it's a precison mechanism, it's going to be alongside shutter jamming as one of the two most common faults.

I didn't get to stay for the festival but I was up in Chateau d'Oex the day before the start of the festival two ( three ? ) years ago and it was stunning

and yes there were a few balloons floating around unofficially like.

Excuse my knowsiness (and for taking this OT)...but does photographing a balloon sorta stand for the longing of personal freedom? I see similarities between the 2 of you. I believe he also has issues with his inlaws (if I'm not mistaken)....

Who doesn't..

On Topic : PaddyG, when you switch your cam to "viewing with display ", does it work then?

...I mean there are regular issues like: Oh, he's not a surgeon, oh, he's not a lawyer, oh he slept with both of my daughters.....but then there are your kind of issues where it seems like they really can't stand you.

What has that todo with PaddyG's camera problem? Some people get allong with one better then the other, they feel the same about the other daughters boyfriend, and he is German..

..she just told you that so you wouldn't feel bad.

Any chance that you've inadvertently enabled mirror-lockup, without realising it?

LiB, stop derailing my thread. Scumbag.

Believe it or not, I'm actually not trying to be funny OR frivolous. Hard as it may be to believe.

Who, what, where, how do I do that?

That crossed my mind as well, but if that was the case I doubt there would be an error message asking for the shutter release to be pressed. Besides turning the camera off and then on again would exit this mode anyway. My best guess is that it's a back to Nikon job.
