I received a letter from https://www.nivi.it/ (Italian highway tolls) with a username and password asking me to log on to pay a motor way fine in italy that they have recorded me not paying. The letter was not registered but it does appear to be valid and not a phishing attempt. We were in Italy last July. They do not provide the date of the transgression or the stretch of highway where it supposedly happened. They are also charging me a processing fee.
I didn’t not pay any charge, from google Ive learnt that possibly a bar was up and we weren’t charged (dont remember if this happened so cannot comment) or maybe that we presented our card but the charge was rejected. I checked the latter no payments were rejected.
I have the master card with all the payments made and corresponding dates to the italian motorway system. Im kind of annoyed that they arent providing a date so that I can cross reference what was paid on that day. They only provide this login information for payment - there isnt someone I can call. Not 100% sure what to do here.
Back in September I made a mistake and I’m just waiting for the fine.
The tolls to the East of Milano work on two ways. You either have a magnetic card (Telepass) or must get a perforated paper card from the machine when you enter the toll section and must feed this paper to another machine when you leave the toll section to calculate your fee.
My mistake was driving into a Telepass lane while not having a card. Of course, the bar never moved and there was no machine to pay. When I tried to reverse, the bar rose and I could drive away. Same thing happened at the motorway exit. I had no paper card to feed the machine so I could not pay. After I backed 1m or so, the bar moved. I guess there’s a camera system to detect issues and the bar is activated without payment to avoid blocking the traffic…but a fine is on the way.
We had no issues though this trip, no lost slips of paper, no missing toll booths or driving through without paying. I used to live in Milan so I am used to their motor way system and how it works.
My grievance here is they arent providing a date or stretch of motor way where this happened.
I'm tempted to ignore this altogether or send them the copies of the motorway transactions via registered post (though that would be at my cost). Super annoying.
Well on the website given in the post, there's a clear tab on the right "Contatti", which does exactly what it says. Maybe if you fill that in, you might get extra details, certainly more than the members on this forum can provide, as they weren't there.
Oh, and right at the top you can even flip the website into English or Spanish!
I’ve been caught out with this on the way to Malpensa airport. There’s a stretch of toll highway without any barriers. You’re suposed to login and pay within 7 (?) days but I didn’t know and a letter arrived months later. The fee was very low…something like the original toll charge plus 5 Euro.
The letter I got had a username and password to login to https://easy.nivisecure.com/ and see dates, times and pictures.
Around Milan airport, there are some motorways with no obvious signs that you have to pay tolls. I had to slow down to read some info that says that you have to pay the toll online. They just have cameras to read your licence plates, no barriers, no booths, nothing. Maybe you were in one of those, for example here:
I looked up Nivi and it seems to be the company that does debt collection on behalf of the highways. So I’m guessing that if you fail to pay Pedemontana, your fine will be collected by Nivi.
