No bagels anywhere

Bagels:

Migros's out of them.

Coop's out of them.

Coop doesn't even have clotted cream anymore.

What's the world coming to?

Come to Nyon.

Well, the Coop and Migros Bagels aren't even bagels. They're just bread rolls with holes in them. Real bagels need to be poached or steamed before baking. I once met the bakery that supplies some of the supermarkets and they admitted they didn't poach them as it was too much trouble, and most Swiss customers didn't know the difference anyway.

I sold real Bagels at the Viadukt market, they were baked at Bagel Boys near Oerlikon and they're excellent.

I don't doubt that but I don't know where there are any other real bagels in the Schwyz area. Thanks for info.

That place and the Friday taco truck were my two happy places when I used to work in the area ...

Olygirl, just in case you are passing through Basel or Zurich - this place is decent and at the main stations:

And Farmy perhaps delivers to Schwyz?

They've been missing in our local coops for a while now. First the plain ones disappeared, but the sesame ones were still around ... now nothing at all.

I noticed the same in the past month or so... All the bagels in Coop and Migros have gone MIA.

I remember all the sesame ones were pulled from the shelves sometime last year or so due to some kind of contamination in sesame seeds here in CH, but I doubt that's related to the current bagel situation, since the plain ones are gone now, too. It makes me wonder if they were sourced from the UK and due to Brexit and Covid, maybe there's a problem with the supply chain (No idea... ).

I've been making my own at home and they work out wonderfully. I can highly recommend the NY Times recipe (boiled then baked):

If anyone is looking to make the recipe I used zopf flour and I found Barley Malt Extract in a local health food store.

I actually find that Bagel Boys bagels are not true in texture and flavour. They do have the outside nice, but sometimes they taste more like dense bread than that springy yet soft bagel interior.

Recently I tried Babi's Bagel Shop https://www.babisbagel.com/ in Zurich and I can say they make excellent bagels as well. You can buy them frozen too in the shop.

There is a bagel shop in Zurich near to Sihlcity:

You're right about the deplorable state of Swiss bagels.

The Bagelstein ones have a sales location very near me but I haven't tried them because they don't look right. I guess I'll give them a chance and the ones you mention in Zurich... but to be honest I'm not holding out much hope.

What about rye bread? Is there any place you can get a good corned beef on rye?

I tried an Aldi bagel last week- I was quite excited, but it turned out to be by far the worst bagel I've ever eaten.

Making them at home is the way to go, at least in this neck of the woods.

I happen to be in Oerlikon tomorrow though, maybe i'll check out the aforementioned Bagel Boys for lunch.

Come to Basel for real, "homemade" bagels. Best I've had outside of North America!

The bagels are back in Coop! Yesterday we bought bagels in Coop Reinach after a long interruption.

Are they real bagels, as in boiled then baked, dense and chewy?

Some years ago the Coop at Seedamm introduced what they claimed to be fresh made bagels, on a limited tme offer. Even went so far as to put out samples.

Alas, yet again merely round bread - and dry at that - masquerading as bagels.

I overheard one Swiss customer saying "I don't understand the fuss over bagels, these are not very good." Of course you don't understand, since these are so far from bagels as to be laughable...

But I digress.

If the bagels in Reinach are the real deal, I might even make the trek...

I believe the bagels in Reinach are the same kind as those which were sold in Coop before and disappeared a few months ago.

Basel. Is there anything it can't do? It seems that way, at least as long as Erasmus is still in the cathedral[1].

[1] When Erasmus' bones in Muenster no longer lie, Basel's doom is written in the sky. (Kinda like a 'Birnam Wood to Dunsinane' vibe.)

Ha ha! The only difference between Basel and bagel is the third letter.

The bagels from COOP are okay edible if you toast them.

My favourite bagels are the Montreal Style Bagels. I found this recipe online with a video. Definitely going to give this a try.
