No fibre internet in Zurich city?

I live quite close to the Zurich HB (between that and the Casino) in 8004.

I tried signing up for fibre in my apartment........and it looks like there is none??? Quite surprised seeing as its 2021!!

Are there any other options available as I'm not really skilled on this front....I need it for home working so quite important to me.

Where exactly have you looked to see if you can get fibre internet? When you put your full address into here are there no options that come up? https://www.ewz.ch/de/private/glasfa...t-pruefen.html

Thanks for that link it says:

Service nicht bestellbar

An Ihrer Adresse sind keine Services über Glasfaser bestellbar, da die Liegenschaft nicht an das Glasfasernetz FTTH angeschlossen ist.

Bitte wenden Sie sich an Ihre Verwaltung oder die Gebäudeeigentümerschaft damit uns diese den Auftrag für die Erschliessung der Liegenschaft erteilt und den nötigen Ausbau Ihrer Wohnung durch einen unserer zertifizierten Installations-Partner veranlasst.

Then what it says is correct and your building is for whatever reason not connected. You will have to get another type of non-fibre internet.

My place didn't have fiber when I moved in, I rang around and Green said they'd install it. Not sure is there other companies who do this. I can't ever remember seeing an installation bill from them.

Installation was free thanks to a generous public project, until end of 2019. Now every building that wants to be connected to the fiber has to pay 2500 + 100 per individual connection

It may be worthwhile to check with the different providers (listed here ) asking if they offer the installation ...

Good to know! I've not moved in a while so it looks like my info is out of date.

same here. unless your building was very new build, it wouldn't have been connected and you need to get the connection installed afterwards.

Thought the apartment was too good to be true. How bloody annoying!!! How can such a central place not have it? Boggles the mind.

Have you not got 5G in Zürich centre?

What exactly is the advantage of fibre? I have a 600Mbps connection on copper and could have up to 1000Mbps...

Fibre can transfer data much, much faster than copper. Whether you take advantage of those speeds in your own household or not is another matter.

When everyone in the neighborhood is watching tv at the same time, then the “best effort“ speed will be much much slower....

Checking the link that someone kindly provided me, it seems the line will do a max of 50mbps....so around 5mb a second? For my job I need a stable fast connection.

I looked into 5G but they all seem to have tiny data caps. Some said unlimited til you look at the T&C..

500Mbps on UPC 600 copper:

Wi-fi on my iPad 4

I run 2 x iMacs, 2 x iPhones, 3 x internet radios, washing machine and tumbler, 4K TV on Netflix, solar panel monitoring and Tesla - not all at the same time - and never have a problem with speed or conductivity...

I checked in with a provider who stated:

Dear Madam and Sir

Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately in your location there isn't a fibre technology installed.

The maximum connection speed in your location is 65 Mbit/s download and 22 Mbit/s upload.

We thank you and wish you a great day.

I've sometimes wondered if I'm vastly underestimating my usage with 2 mobiles, 2 computers and the TV. I'm beginning to think my router may be the bottleneck.

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

Many times, the next time could be a permanent shut off with a judicially used hammer.

I'll need to do some research on routers before that though.

The area definitely has it, it's the people living in the building who never cared for it. Fiber providers can not force people to install it into their houses.

You can ask your neighbors if maybe now they would be interested.

In the meantime if you don't like copper you can try with UPC, when I had it I found it quite fast and reliable even when everybody was doing home office.
