Hi, I need some help regarding coming to Switzerland and living and working in different cantons. I did read quite a lot of similar discussions here, but need some more details, if anyone here has some insight.
We are non-EU, not yet in Switzerland, and the company is now starting the immigration application process with the authorities. From what I read here before, they need to ask both cantons for the permission. But can anyone describe that process in more detail (so I can see if the company is aware of it) - what is the order of steps?
Do they ask canton A (where the company is registered) for the permit, and then after canton A gives their approval ask canton B (where we would live) if they agree that we live there? Or do they immediately inform canton A that we would live in canton B? Or some third combination of steps? If there are some official documents/laws regarding this scenario, I would appreciate any relevant links to those.
I know that there is a possibility to first arrive to canton A, and then apply for moving to canton B, but that would likely take some time, and we would like to settle the kids in their final school (in canton B) immediately.
Any info regarding this would be hugely appreciated!
Far as I know it doesn’t work that way. The employer can only ask for a permit in the canton the work place is located in. It’s up to you - after you arrive and settle in - to then request the possibility to move cantons. It’s nothing to do with your employer.
Whether they could ask the canton you want to live in for a permit without the work place canton being involved I don’t know.
When you are employed, you pay taxes for the local, state and federal levels. It is not in one canton's interest to approve you to work then have you go and live in another canton.
What is the purpose of wanting to live away from your workplace/in another canton ? For most people, it is practical to live close to work.
Also, apartment hunting can be quite challenging.... especially for a family with multiple children - so don't assume just because you 'want' to live in a specific place, that it will be possible....
Millions of people do that in Switzerland. And then we also have the cross-border workers...
