Non-eu Fast Track Permit C

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get your advice on my situation .

I came Lausanne in Dec-2021 via family reunification and started to work in March-2022.
In April-2024, since my wife was about to graduate, my company applied to my Visa and we transferred it me, so I have the B working since then.

Assuming all rest of the requirements done, to apply for fast track C, it says 5 years on B but I read different treatments for family reunification section. In this December26, my 5 years will be completed but I wonder if I should wait for March-27 so it would also mean that I have been working for 5 years as well? What would you advice? Did anyone have similar experience on counting family reunification years to fast track C?

Thanks a lot!

Hi, the easiest is to ask your municipality via email, but in a bit more structured way, i.e. at least split it into bulleted points chronologically.
Overall, you can normally apply 3 months before the expiry of your B, so maybe it helps your particular consideration.

a.k.a. ask Gemini

PS Also, as a non-EU once having obtained C keep in mind that you need to be pre-approved by the new canton when changing cantons =) It’s normally a pro-forma step but still they may be unhappy if you move first. Just in case it’s something you’re considering.

It doesn’t hurt to but in such cases I think an authoritative source makes more sense =) Yet considering that they are probably receiving dozens of such emails I think it makes sense to make an effort preparing the question.

Thanks for your responses, I just wanted to see if anyone has similar experience on getting an early C with a family reunification.

Could you provide a reference for this requirement? A C-permit is permanent residence regardless of nationality, and by nature does not come with cantonal approval requirements.

Hey! To be honest with you my source was a real life person who was told me he experienced something like “OK, it’s already a done deal that you’ve moved but normally you should have asked for a pre-approval” and Comparis but as I’ve tried to find a more official resource I couldn’t. You think my information is wrong? I am EU so I assumed that maybe it was layering up i.e. that normally any C would have been bound to a canton but our status was just giving us an extra layer of mobility.

PS A quick search gives me this which hints a light condition but I am not sure Change of canton - arrival from another canton | ge.ch

Non-EU/EFTA C permit holders have the right to change cantons provided that there is no reason for revoking their authorization according to Article 63 of the Federal Act on Foreign Nationals.

PPS I’ve tried to Gemini it and its point of view is that there could be a clash between federal and cantonal laws, i.e. on the one hand one is allowed to move, on another a clerk is supposed to pre-vet an incoming resident (unless free movement “deactivates” it) but I am not passionate enough to proof check it, maybe you would know if it is BS? =)
