I don't want to start any sort of long series of rants with this post. I've stopped using this site as much because of all of the ranting and name calling. Please, just offer useful advice if you have some.
Does anyone out there have a list of restaurants and coffee shops in Zurich that are totally non smoking? I know that its legal to smoke outside and generally accepted here in Zurich, but I would suppose that a private establishment could set its own rules, right? So, list those places here. I want to go to them.
Starbucks?
I'm not aware of any places with an outside smoking ban.
not sure about that...if this was the case, a private establishment could also set its own rules and be smoking ...
Crimson, that's an interesting point, but couldn't you just post signs or something and say that smoking is not allowed and not offer ashtrays? However, you couldn't just say that it is ok to smoke inside because that is against the Swiss law. Is there a reciprocal law that states that you have to allow smoking outside and offer ashtrays?
I was in Barcelona last week and I was surprised to see private establishments and tourist sites employing people to enforce no smoking rules.
i'm not sure, maybe it is possible. however, it is not illegal to smoke outdoors, so i am not sure that they can ask you not to do it in their terrace. maybe by not offering asthrays people wouldn't light up so easily, however i would think that if you do light up they wouldn't have the right to make you put it off.
no idea if the law covers such a scenario
Not in every case: establishments under a certain size are exempt from the blanket ban.
Anyway, to answer your question, I'm not aware of anywhere that forbids smoking outside.
No wonder my local pub would not let me in. I'm taking a duvet next time!
Cheers,
Nick
The law of nature is probably preventing anyone smoking outside any restaurants or bars tonight...
Crimson, couldn't they just post signs everywhere and make people not light up out of guilt or something. To me, it seems like an interesting business model for Zurich to market to the healthy outdoorsy types.
Making your clientele feel guilty is not a fab business model for restaurants, though...
Sandgrounder, but the clientele that you would be going after are the ones who don't smoke, so it shouldn't matter.
... except that we all have friends who do smoke, so even if we could go to restaurants where smoking was forbidden even outside, we probably wouldn't.
The owners of restaurants aren't daft.
In Zurich, that would fill a table of four about every three weeks, though...
Ok, well please anyone else list places that might have no smoking rules. Surely, there are some place that don't like cancer.
To say it clearly, smoking is permitted outside ALL cafés/restaurants/bars/pubs all over Switzerland. A private establishment CAN set its own rules but not outside its territory.
No, no "private establishment" can set rules outside its premises
I'm talking about the patios of the establishments themselves. Almost every restaurant seems to have its own patio outside.
A) nobody is ordered to place ashtrays anywhere !
B) you cannot place signs outside of your premises about saying what things are not allowed
C) it is not up to you to allow something outside of your premises
D) you now speak about Barcelona. Before you make comparisons, please start to check up on laws of the City of Barcelona and of Catalunya
Wollishofener, would you be so kind as to not post on this thread any longer?
