Well it would be an understatement to say that getting this thread imported was more difficult than I initially thought. Itās been 3 months of work on and off, but it is finally here.
Thanks to @litespeed for starting and maintaining this thread for all these years. I hope it continues to help others on the journey to getting a Swiss passport.
This is great, @Phil_MCR , thank you so much!
Should the two threads be merged?
It was @litespeedās thread so he should decideā¦
Hi Guys, sorry somehow I missed the notification⦠I suppose it does make sense to merge them so it is a single resourceā¦split threads might not be so useful. But I leave that up to the forum God ![]()
I am glad if this thread has helped people over the years. It is a daunting process to negotiatre, made more difficult by differences at canton and town level. But it is for many vitally important to feeling accepted in a country that doesnāt make foreigners feel welcome. It is especially important if you have kids born and being raised here. Good luck to all applicants.
@litespeed created the original āNormal Naturalisation Switzerland - applicant diaryā thread in EF, I created the āOrdinary Naturalisation in Switzerlandā here before the original one restored, could somebody merge them as I also think is does not make sense to have 2 different threads for the same topic?
hey, do you have any update on your timeline after SEM yet? thank you
I had a similar timeline (also ZH) and the end of mine looks like:
Early Jan 2024: received SEM bill
Early April 2024: back to canton
Mid June 2024: final letter from canton, end of process
Thank you, could you tell me was the date of your citizenship mentioned in this letter ? Or the date of citizenship is the date you get your passport and ID?
Itās in the letter.
Getting passport and id is unrelated to getting citizenship (Iām not even sure you have to get them, tho obviously it might make life hard if you donāt have at least the id).
thank you so much , i just want to know how far was the granted date of citizenship from the date of letter.

Hi All, would you know at what stage of the naturalisation process the referral contacts get calls / letters? Is this done at cantonal / communal or federal stage of the process?
We didnāt have to give any referral contacts in Kt. Zurich. Itās definitely not a federal requirement.
Update from my part:
Small commune in VD, 1 person non-EU
- Application sent 05.2023
- Canton asked for my email and phone number 09.2023
- First cantonal checks are finalized. File sent from Canton to Commune 10.2023
- 05.2024 Commune asked for documents
- 08.2024 interview with the police
- 11.2024 Civil registry asking for documents
- 11.2024 knowledge test at the commune
I was informed after the test that I should be waiting around 1 year more bringing the process to almost 2.5 years.
I should note that at each step I was very quick to provide the documents required.
Patience is key.
For me, it was after all the documents had been checked and accepted by the municipality and just before I was invited for an interview. Only one of the 3 referrals was contacted.
If German language requirements are writing A2 and speaking B1. I assume that when I register for a German language test I have to choose which level I want to take the test at first. So I will have to choose level B1, right? So even if they only ask for A2 in writing, in fact I have to pass a B1 writing test as well, because that is the level of the test, right?
