Hello, pardon my kiasu-ism but I'm compiling a list of grocery items to bring from Singapore to Zurich (non-perishables). I know that there are Asian grocers but some things are just not the same. If they are readily available in abundance in these Asian grocers, do let me know and I'll strike it off the list. Thanks.
I'm going to list some items here and build it up from there with the help of you guys. Cheers!
1. Maggie Mee instant noodles
2. Milo (I think I saw it in a German supermarket)
3. White pepper and Lee Kum Kee dark soya sauce (for half boiled eggs)
4. Kaya
5. Salted Fish
6. Bah Ku Teh mix
Not to worry I recognize most of the items, I go regularly shopping in a asia store just over the border in Austria, their slogan: "If I ain't got it, I'll get it"
My suggestion is not to use your baggage allowance on grub-stuff and it will be fun to hunt for it here.
Except for Kaya and Milo, I can find the rest of the items on your list here. At the Asian stores here, I even came across frozen pratas (from Spring Home, SG), and prepacked durians. However, you may want to bring over some Prima Deli premix, which is a fast and useful way to satisfy the occasional cravings.
You said you saw Milo in a German supermarket? Where was it and which supermarket? I would like to get some too
It's not so much the ingredients themselves you'll miss here (in Basel I've been able to find most things) but the price. However, even if you bring some ingredients with you eventually you'll run out and have to pay the high prices anyway. As someone above has said, only bring extra ingredients if you have empty luggage space. Snacks are worth bringing.
What you'll miss is the cooked foods (decent, fun, loud, busy restaurants; food courts; Newton night market etc.). Again, though, you won't miss them straight away so it's not worth bringing cooked foods with you, as by the time the craving sets in the food will have gone off ;)
I think it's primarily because Switzerland isn't part of the EU, but the prices of imported goods is very expensive - even beansprouts cost about 6 times as much here in Basel as they do in London. Tofu is around triple, although I don't know if it's locally produced or not. I tend to buy a bit of everything each time I go back to London.
I'm sure I've even seen Kaya in one of the Asian stores, but I'm more of a honey fan so didn't pay much attention. Kaya reminds me of lemon curd ;)
Thanks. I saw the Milo in one of the larger Netto supermarkt around Rottweil and that was over summer last year.
I live around the Katong-foodie stretch so I will surely miss the walks around my neighborhood to find good makan .

Indian tinned milo powder at the Indian grocery store...may not quite taste the same as you are used to, but it's similar...
Bring a small amount of your comfort foods...
And I do a shopping tour in Zurich from time to time - It'll be on the forum when I book the next one - and we find Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Indian grocery stores...and I'm sure you can ask them if they have it...if you have an empty packet, that will probably make it easier to show them what you want...
I just threw away the empty Milo packet a couple of weeks ago
I found the salted fish (soaked in some clear liquid in glass jars) in asian stores. I have not tried it though as I am not sure how to use them. Anyone tried them before?
