Nvidia Shield

Anyone has a Nvidia Shield?

I'm considering it as a player for mainly Zattoo Premium and Netflix and perhaps Amazon Prime and Spotify. Games are a nice to have.

Yeah - I've got one, the only issue is that there are limited apps for it, a lot of the apps from the play store say they are not compatible, but can be side loaded. Zattoo and Netflix are fine but according to play store Amazon and Spotify are not.

I've got one as well, I'm very happy with it.

I don't use Spotify, but you can cast from the Spotify mobile phone app to any Chromecast device, and the shield is a Chromecast device.

Amazon Video with with unlocator smartdns is a bit weird, it says there is no internet connection, but after 2 minutes or so, that screen goes away and it works perfectly fine. I've also tried it with a VPN which worked without issues.

Zattoo works but the android/ios apps are much better than the Android TV app. The biggest missing feature for me was subtitle support, so I stuck with Swisscom TV instead.

I mainly use mine for Netflix and to play movies off my NAS using Kodi. So far it has played every format I've tried. UI is very snappy and I've tried some game streaming from the PC, which also worked very well.

Can you imagine a person suddenly transported from 1975 trying to understand a word written in this thread?

and then there was the Xbox black Friday special offer. my daugher was very excited. really a missed chance for a Christmas gift.

Been thinking about this myself

Have been very happy with mine, use it as an IPTV box, with the right app you can watch and record TV so will be phasing out the sky system soon.

If you're not going to play on it, but will use it mainly for media consumption, just get the amazon fire tv. its small, cheap, everything just works without quirks, i use it daily for spotify, netflix, amazon prime, live tv via dvblogic tvsource and streaming from my NAS via plex

I think it depends on the setup. NVIDIA always updates their product to be the first out the gate for 4K, HDR, etc. Their hardware decoder is miles ahead and handles HEVC (H.265) encoding flawlessly.

Also, with SPMC (fork of Kodi) being developed on the SHIELD for the SHIELD, you have a software platform that is brilliant. Built in OS support for exposing storage on the network, and mounting network storage locally, great remote and gamepad, it's a good device.

I don't think there's a better box under the TV today, I may be biased though. It's a perfect Steamlink replacement: play all your games on the high end PC from the comfort of a couch+65" TV.

To each his own, I am not invalidating the Shield, in fact I like the device and I was really close to getting it instead of the fire tv. The reason why I prefer the fire TV is because its much smaller, cheaper and i hide it out of sight and manage it with a harmony remote. I also have a watercooled gaming PC and stream my games on fire tv via moonlight - works like a charm with the exception of the fire tv controller which is basically a cheap piece of plastic that feels odd in the hand.

Anyone running the Plex Media Server (PMS) on the Nvidia?

I'm getting some strange results and struggling to understand the different storage options/terminology.

Seems you have internal storage, removable storage and network storage.

I didn't want to pay for the 500GB (Pro) version and instead bought the 16GB version and purchased a 64GB USB stick.

I assumed that plugging in a USB into the NVIDIA, would then provide me with 80GB (approx) of internal storage, which the Plex Server would use.

However this doesn't seem to be the case and the PMS has run out of space.

Thoughts?

Did you follow these instructions?

In Plex Settings/Transcoder, you have to change the temporal folder of the transcoder and specifiy one on the USB storage.

Never mind someone transported from 1975. I’m here now and trying to understand.
