Oberwil bei Zug - what's there?

Hi everyone! I might be moving to Oberwil bei Zug, but have never been there and have no idea what to expect. Does anyone know this area? I've been to the old town in Zug and loved it - is Oberwil similar to this? I've also been to Baar and Steinhausen - but these areas didn't have that same charm as the old town. Any information about Oberwil would be very helpful!

PS - To all of you who gave me such great advice about the apartment on Poststrasse - thank you! - but unfortunately we didn't get that apartment. The search continues!

Oberwil is about a 7 minute walk from where we live. It is extremely quiet except when the church bells go (and they have a huge one that tolls for what seems like forever on a Saturday evening). There isn't a lot there apart from the church, a school, two or three restaurants and a Landi. I don't think there is a butcher or baker any more either. IMHO, it is a much nicer place than poststrasse (still haven't got those photo's to you but it doesn't matter now I suppose). You could walk to Zug centre in about 25 minutes and there is a very regular bus service and a train station. It also has the largest psychiatric hospital in Switzerland, so something for everyone

Just wanted to add that Oberwil isn't like Baar or Steinhausen it is just a small quiet village and I would say it's main thing is agriculture. I would like to live there, they seem to have a real community and everyone has a place in it. We went over to the school at the beginning of December. All the pupils were there with candles in tissue paper crowns on their heads or a turnip with a candle in it. All the lights in the village were turned off, the main road was closed and around 100 children paraded around in the pitch black with 6 kids on cowbells guiding them. Came to the lake and St Nicholas arrived by boat with his smutzli. Fabulous experience.

Thanks Zug Bound - that was really helpful! It sounds like a wonderful (but very small) town. Hopefully I get this one!

Does anyone know if there's a grocery store in town??

Landi is a small (but well stocked little grocery shop). We were just over there again yesterday and I noticed a kitchen fitting shop, a couple of garages and a classic car (and suit of armour) shop . It really is a gorgeous place. I would check how far away the train line is from your proposed residence, they were rocking through yesterday.

We decided to sign the lease today - no turning back now! Sounded like a great find and we didn't want to pass it up. Thanks for the advice! Maybe I'll run into you at the landi.....

That's great news! Welcome to Zug. When will you make the move?

Thanks for the welcome Mosaic! We'll be coming over on May 29th and we'll be staying in a temporary apartment in Cham for the month of June. We move into our apartment in Oberwil on July 1st. Can't wait to get there and leave all the NYC stress behind........aaahhhhh....

SwissMiss79, you'll love the lakeside park in Cham. Best in the area!
