He filmed himself boasting about breaking the rules and not being caught. He got sentenced to 1 year in prison for his troubles (it could have been 5).

Lock 'im up with the planespotters!

All sounds like a good story in years to come to tell the grandkids.

It’s Friday, the case is pure comedy.

Guy got frustrated because he couldn’t buy food. Hello? That’s a Sunday in Switzerland, no shops hahaha

During his trial, which began in June, Zgraggen told the court he had never intended to insult the Hindu holiday or the Balinese people. He said he made the posts while hungry and frustrated that he could not obtain food during the shutdown. He said he had not fully understood the extent of the restrictions.

Also, quite funny to use English. If he had spoken Swiss German he would not be in jail hahahaha

Seems a bit harsh, but their country, their laws which should be respected.

If this was accidentally breaking the rules, it would be harsh. But for deliberately breaking the rules and then posting a video of breaking the rules with caption “f*ck nyepi day and fuck your rules too” it seems fair enough.

This is the bottom of the issue. One thing is to break a law. Another thing is to upload the video to instagram and then wonder why people is furious and the police starts an investigation.

Also, the ZH politician that ended with a suspended sentence for hurting religious feelings in Switzerland was because the court could not prove “clear intent to hurt”. She denied being aware of shooting a replica of a religious image. In contrast the guy in Bali confirmed being aware of the law and anyway not respecting it.

I take an absolutist approach to the law, one that is not coloured by how obnoxious I may find the person or their behaviour. From a Western perspective, it seems harsh to sentence someone to a year in prison simply for showing disrespect towards their host country and posting obnoxious material on social media.

I would regard deportation and a lifetime entry ban as a more appropriate response. That way his family and friends are not also punished for his stupidity.
