Obvious Tax Deductions

Assumptions :-

Health insurance of which about 2,500 is deductible

Lunch at work about 3,300

Training costs about 2% of salary

Standard deduction 500

Travel to work not sure amount but a reasonable assumption.

This is actually what I am looking for...

who actually can ask for tax deduction? I heard rumors that it depens on salary (should be more than 120k/year), somebody says that it depends on work permit as well (no way to ask for tax deduction with L work permit).

Could you please point out for some law or statement?

If this law doesn't exist, then why tax deduction makes no sense with salary below 120k.

Thanks a lot.

If you earn more than 120,000 a year you have to file a tax return.

If you hold a C permit you have to file a tax return.

If you hold a B permit and earn under 120,000 you can ask for deductions or ask to file a return the following year iirc.

Also see here:

https://www.ch.ch/en/tax-source/

You can also do it if you're below 120k, just that in that case you need to request the money back, which was already subtracted from your salary. It probably depends on the Kanton, but in Zürich you need to submit an "Antrag für quellensteuerpflichtige Arbeitnehmende auf Neuveranlagung der Quellensteuer" at the beginning of the year.

Mine was done on my behalf for Year 2013.

(Permit B).

They extended deadline for return of form to November.

I had not heard anything from Zug Tax man and was told it can then take 6 months plus for them to process the forms.

Guess if I owe them money , then they add interest from a certain date and if they own me money ...pay me interest on whats owed (very low amount).

Swiss citizen and C permit holders (and their family members) are taxed normally (i.e. they declare and pay their tax on a yearly basis).

All other people are taxed at source, and in this category:

- if you earn no more than 120k/year, by default they will not send a tax declaration form (to correct the tax at source already deducted), but you can ask for it.

- if you earn more than 120k/year, by default they will send you a tax declaration form yearly to correct the tax at source already deducted (note that you are still taxed at source, but they send you form to make corrections without you asking for it).

The reason why for >120k/year they make correction automatically is because as the salary is higher the potential deviation between pure tax at source and your individual tax as if taxed normally is higher.

So, as I see, dependency on work permit is exist. Unfortunatelly nobody has mentioned "L" work permit, but I guess it is a part of

with no limitation.

So, if I earn no more than 120k then I can ask (Gemeinde?) to do tax duduction. Probably it was already done, yaeh?

As a summary I see that salary isn't a trigger to ask for deduction: you can do it if you ear less\more 120k (with more or less chance to get money back).

From permits I understood that CH and C permits owners do deduction as well, but at the end of the year. Owners of the remaining permits should ask about it expressly.

Correct me if I wrong.

Any idea if you can you deduct the cost of C-permits or naturalisation?

No. Not that I’ve ever seen on my forms.

Thanks. I guess they wouldn't put it on the forms - might attract some comments from Eidgenossen.

Never given as a possibility in the instructions either as far as I can make out.

Got a tax form from the Steueramt in Zurich. I have a B and am above the threshold, so didn't come as a surprise. Since my tax situation is really straightforward (single, no kids, no car, no real estate, no wealth, etc) I set about filling it out today.

I live in a low-income tax gemeinde (Thalwil) and I contributed to the maximum in Pillar 3a. It looks like I need to pay on top of my Quellensteuer, which strikes me as a bit odd.

Can you confirm whether the deductions below are OK or whether I left out something obvious?

- Lump deduction for use of bicycle: CHF 700

- Full deduction for external 'verpflegung': CHF 3'200

- Work-related costs, 3% of net income: CHF 4'000 (capped)

- Lump sum deduction for 'weiterbildungskosten': CHF 500

- Pillar 3a contribution: CHF 6'739.

- Health and other private insurances: CHF 2'600 / CHF 1'700 (capped, kanton/state)

By the way: will I be asked to motivate my deduction for the external 'verpflegung'? I didn't save receipts of my daily purchases...

Many thanks!

Any deductilbles for lunch? Here you have deductions for having a subsidised canteen at work, going home for lunch, etc.

Any credit cards with money still to be paid off on them? Again the amount and interest can be deducted here in Fribourg.

Any pillar 2 or 3b contributions? Extra pension years bought?

Any money you owe on credit cards specifically on the December statement can be submitted as debt and is tax-deductible. Attach a copy.

The same goes for ongoing personal loans taken out with banks. Attach annual statement.

Ordinarily you are not asked to motivate / document your deduction for 'Verpflegung'. It should state on the tax form if proof/documents are to be submitted in that respect. When I claimed something like that, I was not asked for any proof, the deduction was accepted.

You can deduct interest for any personal loans?? I thought you could only deduct the interest when you buy a house?

How much would a tram ticket cost for commuting

Little bit more than the CHF 700 for biking: CHF 780. Plus I didn't have that ticket, so for those 30 francs of tax saving I figured it'd be better to take the one I wouldn't risk being asked about.

The CHF 3,200 is for lunch, by the way - it's also a standard deductible.

I just find it weird that living in a low-tax Gemeinde (80%) and max Pillar 3a contribution I need to pay extra. Can't imagine that more than half of the single men in kanton Zurich pay less?! Ah well.

Thanks for the feedback so far; I'll additional suggestions are welcome!

Your travel costs are way too cheap.

Yes these deductions can be accepted, the tax programme also asks the user to list the personal debts accounts with a negative balance and provide the relevant statements. It seems the more debt there is on 31.12, the higher the amount of deductions.

Been reading though this thread now a couple of times and would like to ask you Friburger's on specifics for the Canton FR (I keep postponing the declaration and now have until Sept 30th but need to have it done).

Salary wise I'm over the CHF 120K threshold for tax declaration so has to be done...

1) Travel Expense (GA Card) deduction as this costs me CHF 3'650 per year so this is what I put down last time I did my tax return.

2) Lunch deduction (what's the total allowed? Do I enter the same here for 2014 as I did for 2013?)

3) Medical Insurance (I pay my own monthly as well as my partners on top totaling around CHF 650 per month for the two of us)? Max allowed? Percentage of what I pay? Only my own or both of us?

Any pointers are highly appreciated...

PS. My French and German sucks so not much help if you add a CH link I'm afraid... :-(
