Obvious Tax Deductions

for point 2) - if nothing changed from '13 to '14 and in '13's taxes the lunch deduction you requested was granted as valid, then yes, you can put the same again, - it should be around Fr.3'200.--, it might be more...

when filling in your tax forms, it's useful to have the previous year's ones there with you to copy from, making adjustments for any changes that took place...

If you’ve already done it before I would hope you know more or less what your deductions are. Did you even look at the booklet they sent you with your forms? It’s all in there. Simply look in the relevant section (code numbers from forms) of the booklet to find the info you need. Some things do change from year to year so make sure to check.

Transport code is 2.11 - I can’t help with that as the OH drives into work.

Lunch depends on where you have it. The OH has a subsided canteen so can claim 7.50 per day up to a max of 1,600. See Code 2.12 of booklet if you do it differently.

Health insurance (4.11) for a couple is 8,760 flat deduction.

And yes, my French pretty much sucks as well.

Maximum deduction is roughly half for that in ZH for a couple, even less for Bund tax

Is the possibility to deduct the health insurance premium, only in certain cantons?

For Basel-Stadt my understanding is that the annual insurance premium is not deductible however medical bills of a high amount (something like CHF4000) are deductible.

What does that have to do with the question asked? Frank2k is specifically asking about Fribourg canton taxation.

SwissMorgs, yes I do think they vary from canton to canton. Here you can claim both the health insurance and a percentage I think if your medical expenses are over a certain amount during the year. Might be the whole amount, I’ve never had to claim it so don’t know for sure and it’s far too hot to go upstairs and dig out the taxation booklet to check.

Many of these deductions are canton-dependent, so you really have to consult the documentation that comes with the tax form. I live in VD and the on-line declaration takes you through each deduction as you get to it. For health-insurance it's a fixed amount which has nothing to do with reality (it was probably set in 1950 and has never been changed). For actual medical costs, the cantonal tax will only allow deductions if your bills exceed 20% of your taxable income, though for the federal tax they will deduct the whole.

Yeah, I got the deductions I'm entitled to so happy enough with that part.

I did the 2013 return as good as I could and actually sent a copy of my salary cert in with the return. I got some paperwork back with some print outs where the tax man had actually filled in some extra deductions so I was happy as Larry. I claimed full lunch (work in VD and no canteen present) and full GA card (CHF 3'550 last year). I think they added something on the health insurance but I cannot get the numbers to tie in correctly...

Now this said, there is no longer a hard copy version of the tax return for 2014, so I had the electronic version downloaded and started to fill it out (I quickly lost interest tbh). It seems like there a good number of changes to the new version as I of course kept a copy of the one I filled out last time to speed things up the 2014 return...

As my partner and I are not registered or married I guess I cannot claim for both of us (4.11)?

I think I may be OK for the rest tbh...

Don't Freiburg residents have to pay Bund tax like all the other cantons? I learn something every day

As I have no idea what a Bund tax is I can’t tell you. Explain and I might be able to say yes or no.

Frank2k, it’s 4,380 for a single person. The booklet is also available in PDF form here:

http://www.fr.ch/scc/files/pdf70/Ins…ns_2014_FR.pdf

Swiss residents have 3 separate taxes to pay, Village, Canton & a tax to the central government in Bern. The 4380 you refer to is for Village & Cantonal tax.

Allowance for central government tax (Bundessteuer in German) is 1700 CHF

We probably do, I can’t find the info sheet they send me each year with the breakdown but I know one or two items are different. But even so the Federal figure isn’t put down on our tax returns, only the cantonal one.

In some cantons, the invoice for the Bundessteuer (federal tax) arrives separately from the municipal and cantonal one.

I enquired about something concerning Bundessteuer recently and was informed that they don't issue a final invoice for the Bundessteuer until the Gemeinde has issued their final invoice for the other two taxes.

The Bundessteuer provisional invoice is also issued upon the basis of the Gemeinde's provisional figures.

Having said that the Bundessteuer provisional invoice can be contested and cancelled separately, more easily and over the telephone, whereas in order to contest/cancel a Gemeinde's provisional invoice (for municipal and cantonal taxes) ordinarily one requires documentary proof.

Yes, we get the invoices separately, but the actual breakdown taken from the tax form we submitted includes both cantonal and federal sides. And yes, fatmanfilms the federal allowance for health insurance was 1,750 each - total 3,500 (found the piece of paper ).

Frank2k, is her income also going on the form? If so you might be able to claim for a married couple or possibly put down 2 separate singles. Ask the cantonal taxation office, they’re usually quite helpful in sorting these queries out. After all, it benefits them if you know what you’re doing when it comes to filling in the form.

No, only my figures go on the form...

Thanks a mill @Medea Fleecestealer for the pointers and help :-)

You’re welcome Frank2K.

My best source of tax deductions has just been cut off, it seems. I read that the maximum travel to work allowance will be set at a flat rate of 500CHF, at least for Geneva, maybe federally. A shame as I was claiming 14kCHF up to now . Confirmation by real experts welcome .

PS I always thought this was one of the silliest tax deductions I've ever heard of. Totally anti-ecological. Which never prevented me from claiming it, I'm afraid.

Eeek! If it’s Federal that’ll hit us as well as we can claim the OH’s travel to Lausanne and back every work day. Where did you read that FrankZappa?

I was aware of the change which is why I retired, my travel deductions were roughly 20k, working is too expensive without the deduction

Do you have a link FMF?

My sources were 1) colleague of a colleague and 2) the local french rag "Dauphine libérée". Let's hope that that source of wisdom fatmanfilms can come up with something more reliable...
