Olten for the day

With Coop day passes in hand the Mrs and I will be visiting Olten on Thursday. Get in before 12 and will leave around 6 PM. According to mySwitzerland the old town is a must see.

Are their ant ‘must sees’ that we mustn’t miss? Anything we can overlook?

Many thanks in advance.

I'm regularly in Olten for work. I'm not an expert but I would say that there are more interesting places to spend a day. As weather is great and the sky is clear, I would go to the mountains.

Done that, got the t-shirts. Been here since 1985. It’s Olten’s turn.

Olten tourism lists this as one of the top sights:

I think that says it all…

Best thing about Olten is that it is the Swiss railway hub for many other destinations...

Go to Domodossola and take the Centovalli to Locarno and come back via Olten

I pass by Olten while running or riding the bike. Have not seen anything special beyond the wooden bridge over the Aare. Don't know the name of the hill, but it's north of Trimbach and there's Ruine Froburg (old fortification). I like running there because the trails are natural, no stairs, just gravel and leaves.

There's also a short hike to Säli-Schlössli. Another fortification related to the Aarburg fortress. Nice view from there to the valley below , the Alps and Jura. 3 Tannen beer is sold there, not bad

5 min by train from Olten there's the Aarburg fortress. It's possible to walk around it, but not open to the public. Anyway interesting. If the weather is nice, spending the afternoon in the restaurant terraces under the shadow of the fortress is a good plan.

I used to live in Olten, it's a very nice place, miss living there

Besides old town I recommend a little hike to Sälischlössli or a walk to Aarburg to see this cute pretty castle.

When you will be in old town, I recommend Bar Sisieme for their rooftop deck and beautiful town views. Galicia bar is also cool, the owner is a quite well-known swiss writer and they have their own beer and brewery, Drei Tannen.

Bodega has great tapas and steaks, best pizza is in La Carbonara - or if you are brave enough go to Rathskeller - that's where locals go

Olten is also home to famous Kalte Lust, so after a nice lunch that's a great place for ice cream.

I suspect that Bowlie's visit to Olten on a Thursday is a set up for a Friday thread. Looking forward how he will explain us that it was totally worth it

For the sceptics, here are image results from “olten spazieren am flussufer” (Olten, walking along the banks of the river);

Actually we just want to throw away f50 each just to sit in the Restaurant car for 5 hours ...

There is a syrian restaurant which has opened recently, restaurant orient. Doesn't look like much from outside I really like it there.

Rathskeller (locals call it Chöbu) is well known for it's (overrated) burgers and rude service. The previous long term waitress retired during covid but if you are used to US customer service behaviour spiel you will still have a hard time

Why waste your entire CH day pass on... Olten, of all places?

Used to live in Olten years ago in the Old City. A visit to Rathskeller is where we used to go. The chicken wings are crispy, hot, fresh, tasty-- my favorite!

There are 2 ice cream places in the Old City-- why not try a scoop from each place?

Sit on the terrace area in front of the old tower at the Suteria Café enjoying a coffee and pastry.

Right across from Suteria is our favorite Thai restaurant for an authentic lunch buffet (11:30am -2 pm) for only 25 Chf per person.
