Once bronchitis always?

Someone told me when you got a bronchitis you never get rid of it in a way that it will come back from time to time or often. Any thoughts about this?

Every flu I have are followed by a bronchitis.

Unless it's chronic, it will go away in a relative short time. What might happen is the healing not fully done and bronchitis recurs.

I've had bronchitis before. Haven't had it in 15+ years.

Do you smoke? If you do, you can be pretty sure the bronchitis will keep coming back. Even if you quit smoking, it will come back for a while, but eventually stop. My experience at least. That was years ago, but no trouble now, thank goodness.

I get at least one per year sometimes more

Are you totally sure it's bronchitis and not some other kind of lung infection? Are you being properly taken care of, as in, doctor prescription and not self medicated? Are you otherwise relatively healthy? Do you smoke?

If you have a lung inflamation so often, you need to check it out. No use going through net pages of missinformation. Go to one or two doctors and get it checked.

I used to have lung infections quite often because I have a sensible respiratory track (sinusitis). I had to take a special medicament in the beginning of winter to reinforce my system. Haven't had anything worse than a common cold in a while.

I have no idea......i never get ill.

cheers

p.s. This thread has not put me off wanting to snog you

I'd say you do a PFT(Pulmonary Function Test). It is a simple test to check lung capacity. You can get it done with a lung specialist/Pulmonologist - and eliminate the possibility of Asthma.

Asthma: yes

Smoking:no

Bronchities are usually bacterial in my case which are always treated with antibiotics.

Bronchitis is a general term to describe an infection of the bronchi - the larger tubes leading to and in your lungs. It can be viral or bacterial.

You can get infections as a secondary infection from a cold amongst other things.

You can get it sporadically without issues. But if you get a bad case and end up scaring your bronchi, it is possible that you will get future infections more easily: the scaring means that the mechanistic clearing of the bronchi is not as effective, resulting in a greater chance of infection.

So in answer yes and no. You don't automatically become a carrier - e.g. like TB where once infected you are unlikely to ever be "clean" again - but there is a higher likelihood of getting bronchitis again if you have a heavy cold you can't shift.

Asthma doesn't help the situation.

Not only, but also - Bronchitis is actually any inflammation of the bronchi, which may or may not be caused by an infection.

I sometimes get it, although not for a while, and it can be caused by almost anything that triggers an irritation, sometimes just a dry throat, then is aggravated by coughing and get worse, sometimes just for half an hour, sometimes last for several hours. And it may recur frequently over a few days, or sometimes just give one attack then go away. I have a steroid inhaler to reduce the inflammation when I have an attack, and if I have it with me it usually works to reduce coughing within a few minutes.

It's particularly annoying when I'm in pain from some old chest and back injuries which may also play a part in bringing it on
