Online forum abuse, is it real? are you a victim?

But your first (and only) thread ever on this forum was about not being able to post more than 4 PM's in a 24 hour period. I didn't see any talk of conservative politics in that thread nor any of the other claims you make.

Retarted message that keeps appearing

Great list. I have to add the following:

7. Don't jump on a thread and insult a person out of the blue because you hold a grudge against them. And don't go on pretending that the only reason you did was because you were stating your point of view. It is pretty clear you do such stuff out of jealousy. People here are not dumb. Stop being jealous. Grow up and grow a pair of tits.

p.s. I won't be leaving this forum anytime soon so get used to it.

I wasn't referring to myself but just throwing an example out there.

Making it up as you go along...?? The subject title asks, "are you a victim", not some fictitious character.

Oh so you want me to go search the threads and actually post some examples here or what?

Well.. I always do find it suspicious when someone posts fiction to make a point.

Good for you.

It's like this in my book: I respect individuals who show respect for other people.

If someone is nasty and rude to other people in this forum, whether they are a Mod or an Admin or the freaking president of country X, I don't give a flying .... as to who they are, they get no love from me.

I am skeptical about the idea that non-native speakers might misinterpret things posted on this forum, they definitely do not sound like they misinterpret things when they hurl insults on the threads. So I am not sure if I buy that.

EDIT: I have reached my daily posting quota.

@Lifeisabuffet: Regarding your 7.

Not wishing to add fuel to the fire but I think I know who you are referring to and, if I am right, then I have to albeit reluctantly agree with you. I've noticed this pattern of behaviour from a certain EFer as well for some time now and who, in all honesty, really ought to know way better given who they are...

How I hate when threads are written in subtle code.

It's like waving a gossip candy in front of the baby and then snigger "no, you can't have it!"

So, did I understand correctly someone got offended with poetry?

I don't really care about the groans, though the red bloobies on an user usually make me wary of helping said user (because I usually feel I am being trolled, and unfortunately it's usually correct).

But name calling is a no-no. I had some name calling a while back. It does make the forum using a bit dirty...

Now, where did I leave the champagne left-overs... Oh lookie! Chocolate X-Mas cake!

8. Yawn...

I'm rather a reader than a writer on this forum, but in this case I'd like to "jump" on this post because (whatever happened here ... , couldn't figure it out) I find your tone quite offensive. It may justified or not, but I don't feel that this is a fair behavoir of you either.

... and now that I've seen what Isha, who I respect a lot, has replied to this topic, I'm not sure wheather it might be justified or not... however I hope the people involved in this, don't carry the stuff too heavy in their hearts.

(and this is what I call "helpless non-native English"! Merry christmas everyone!

FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH,

As a resent newbie to E.F this thread and its topic actually surprises me !!

There seem to be a open forum where anyone can post their opinions and thoughts, whilst you can expect other members to join in ,respond or reply in just the same open fashion.

Having read lots of threads over the past few months , this leads mostly to a quite informative dialogue, at times some heated debate and often with silly(read funny) or open hearted comments.

In fact I found the feel and tone of EF to be quite unique, people seem to be

mostly helpful open and quite funny, in short, EF members comes across as genuine people.

There might have been a comment here or there, that perhaps -in my opinion -was not best placed, however, it goes with the territory of posting something in an on-line forum.

I have read thread runaways, where the mods have kept the threads running or even part-taken in banter, but the value of the thread have not been devalued in any way, it have been quite entertaining reading.

Personally I would be sad to see EF as a more "controlled and restrictive" environment where openness might be lost and a bit of banter is limited, or even restricted by the moderators.

You all seem like a great bunch, and it is a pleasure to be here on EF.

Hope you all had a great x mas and look forward to a great beginning in 2012.

No! Just me,and maybe assassin

I don't condone bullying or abuse of any kind, however, I think it would do some people good to make use of the ignore function. The ignore function really is a good thing.

Well I must say that recently I received some rather pointed retorts to a couple of my comments that were totally unexpected. I think I've learned that it is not necessarily what I posted, rather how I phrased it. If I had started it with "I hope no one gets offended by this, but...", or "At the risk of unintentionally upsetting someone...", etc. I probably would have avoided the nasty remarks.

There's a difference between upsetting someone and actually abusing them. As a mod in few other places (no, not that one), from my experience it's usually pretty clear when it's abuse.

Moderator action is often not visible. It might be a PM to the offender to pack it in or be banned for a while.

Exactly ..!!

As a Mod I've seen a couple of cases in the past where a member was actually being stalked (in real life) by another from the forum. It was a real mess, not something that can be easily dealt with and there was very little if anything the Mods could do to help. The victim eventually had to cease posting on the forum entirely in a bid to regain control of their private life.

If you need assistance in this there are always people willing to help !

I must be a bit dim or never got involved in PM's. Quite honestly I know nothing about this recent discord. I love this place like a friend and I have no idea about whats going on. What I do know is, like in life, it's what you make of it.

vwild1: There is all kinds of abuse. The one you mentioned is an extreme case of stalking that even the police would have acted upon.

There is outright abuse and there is subtle abuse. If a poster has been unfairly treated by another poster again and again, it's abuse as well.

That's why I posted a suggested list of guidelines. As a mod, what do you think?
