When the ancient Romans conquered Switzerland they founded, among others, the military base Vindonissa and what today is Windisch, canton AG. It is one of the country’s richest sources of artifacts and information on that time.
Last year an additional Roman citadel was discovered during construction works for new buildings at the Zürcherstrasse. Because of this it must be archeologically “harvested” as fast as possible, these works end in July.
The excavation site is open to the public May 9, 2026 from 10 to 16 hours, entrance is free.
