Open Mic nights in Zug / Zurich?

OK I'm starting to get a little bit settled in, trying to get as much of my old UK routine in place over here to achieve some normality . Part of this was I used to play at an Open Mic night every Thursday (the music/guitar kind not the stand-up comedy kind).

Does anyone know if there are any Open Mic's of this kind, if so where and when? And what's the standard like, I don't want to go and get laughed off stage cos everyone else is awesome and I'm just there thrashing my guitar and shouting badly (well not quite but you get the idea!)

I would also like information......

.......about kareoke.

I know that it's not the same. But all the same......

There's a karaoke on every other friday night in the Oliver Twist. (I think this friday it's on)

there's also Karaoke at the Acapulco Bar on a sunday night.

My wife came over for the weekend a short while back and to give her a flavour of Zurich I ended up taking her to both

Hi, there

There used to be an Open Mic night at Kaufleuten, but it is no longer on (see thread Zurich open mic night on 8 November, 2006 ). Just mentioning this so that you don't go there in vain.

But there is Karaoke from Hell at Mascotte on Tuesdays, starting at 10 p.m. http://www.mascotte.ch/ . I have never been, though.

As regards Karaoke, see [Karaoke [suggestion for an event]](http://www.englishforum.ch/social-events/3704-karaoke-suggestion-event.html) Also, check out the calendar, there have been at least two EF karaoke events lately.

Have fun

Idgie

Hi , Karaoke from hell is with a live band , there is a list of songs they can play and you have to put your name on a list.

The casino theater in winterthur have an open night once a month I think but you have to register in advance ( day before )

It's a list of songs pretty much on the heavy rock side of things, although the odd one is always a bit of surprise (Kids in America by Kim wilde always looks a bit out of place to me).

The lyrics are projected up against a wall as a print, and are not the type that come up line by line and change colour when it's time to sing

I'm someone who never really got past that "playing the F chord" stage of the guitar. But the idea of an open night sounds like good fun, sitting there having a beer listening to various guys do their stuff. If there isn't one on, what about trying to get one arranged?

Perhaps we could ask at the Cana bar this week whether one could be arranged? If it was an acoustic night, what would be needed apart from people bring their guitars along? Would a Mic and amplifier be needed?

Hi Folks,

I can provide a small PA and the mics for that ... I am a drummer so playing at such things is mostly out... but I wouldn't mind the social side and Ill bring my club PA with me ( trust me its a pair of active speakers on stands..)

The Roadhouse in Luzern do an all comers Jam session on wednesday nights, not sure if it's a solo thing though.

I would be interested in this in terms of playing (acoustic blues fingerpicking), but not singing. So is there are budding singers out there feeling the need to sing the blues then let's get it owwn....

Yes that does sound like a good plan Tim! The ones I used to attend had a mic / amp available, with a "sound man" who ran them through a deck to make sure that they were reasonably well balanced out. However I'm equally happy to not use them if it's easier to get a venue.

Audiodruid, sounds like the set up you have is very similar to the ones I used to use in the UK so if we can find somewhere willing to stage something like this then that would seem to be all that we'd need in terms of equipment - then the performers bring their own guitar / keyboard / bongos / whatever

I know all the words to "Billy Don't Be A Hero" if that helps

"Billy Don't Be A Hero now you've killed a man in Memphis" might work.

The "Turm" in Konstanz have a jam night on Sunday, but I've never been in town at the time...

dave

The Roadhouse...mmmm....Does they play both kinds, Country and Western ? How much "Rawhide" can a man take ?

Dave,

If you know any Blind Willie McTell then I'd quite happily just sit in awe of the guitar skills, no singing required

I know in the UK some people just played with no singing, one guy did Motorheads Ace Of Spades on his homemade electric ukelele (true story...)

Mississippi John Hurt, Rev Gary Davis, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake. Thats pretty much the stuff that interests me.

Blind Willie has a very distinctive sound as he played a 12-string, and his wife doubled on vocals. My personal favourite of his is "Searching the desert for the blues" and "I got religion".

Right, since the replies dried up it seems that nobody knows of a local open mic night.

So I propose that we find a venue who are willing to host one, and start it. The one I went to in Exeter started off as just 3 blokes who played to themselves and a couple of friends, by the end of it there were about 13 of us as "regulars" and the pub was usually packed!

"If you build it, they will come"

While I'm quite happy to scout potential venues in Zug, I would suggest that Zurich would probably be a better catchment area for both a willing venue and willing participants! Audiodruid, could you get across fro St Gallen for it!? Seems like quite a trip! We could maybe make it a regular monthly thing, say first Thursday of every month (or whatever day suits people from here?)

Plus we could then plug it in the Social Events and have a meetup / singalong / shindig with a few members from here as well?

Oh yes St Gallen zurich no problem... I used to travel 4 hrs to rehearsals in the UK (Reading to cardiff ) for it's only distance...

I have some mates who run the Pirates bar in Hinwill , they have a stage and PA and are willing to let us use there too.

Sounds good! Reading to Cardiff is a bit of a mission

I'll have a look on a map and at SBB and see how easy it is to get to Hinwill from Zug, sounds like a decent venue, the stage sounds a bit daunting though - I'm used to a chair in a corner of a pub, not a stage with screaming fans

(screaming "Oh god, make it stop" that is hahaha)
