Opera dress code?

Hi All,

I have been physically living here for few days and desperately need your advise. Opera night tomorrow!!! Sounds like big thing but since I even did not manage to check out downtown Zurich I have no clue how people dress for an eve like that? Has anyone been to Opera and can tell me what is the dress code in here...

There is no real dress code. You will see some people in complete evening attire and some in more casual clothing, maybe even a few in jeans - even though I have just checked and ticket prices are from CHF 38 to 270, tomorrow, i.e., on the upper end, so there will be not as many jeans as on other days. Also, it is Nabucco and the pre-Christmas season, so that I would expect the dresses to be a bit more festive than in the summer.

So, wear something nice and a little festive you feel comfortable in.

I like to sport a particularly impressive codpiece when I frequent the opera.

For the Opernhaus, avoid jeans and trainers.

That's it.

Some will be in evening dress, some will be dressed worse than you.

It's a wonderful place to grab an opera or ballet. The sound is great and the views are usually pretty darn good.

What are you going to see? If you don't speak a local language (or Italian) and are taking in an opera, you might want to Google the story so you can follow the acts and the story.

I love opera. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

It's probably a good idea to google the story even if you do understand the language. Especially if it's a "modern" rendition, the producers tends to assume people know the story anyhow and thus continuity can get sacrificed for art.

I never took you for an opera buff! I've still to pop my opera cherry, plan to do so next year after you know who moves closer to the big ZH. What do you recommend?

Oh, and in 2014, if you want to pop your opera cherry there's a few of the biggies on. If you want to see one where you know all the tunes already, go see Carmen. If you want great drama, go see Otello. I'm looking forward to La Fanciulla del West

In all honesty, any mainstream opera will be nice because you'll know many of the songs or at least the melodies.

Aida and Carmen are there next year, Aida sooner.

Don't rule out ballet either.

Opernhaus Zurich is very nice for the sound. Tonhalle a little less so. KKL is the absolute best place to take music in anywhere....I've done classical and modern there. Brilliant.

I must admit that the First Trombone from La Scala played at my wedding. Alain Lombard is also a family friend. We therefore tend to get into many events for free or for very little.....one of my favourite times was when the original Broadway cast did West Side Story at La Scala.....absolutely brilliant!

I love the ballet, used to go regularly when I lived in Edinburgh. KKL is good, I saw Lord of the Rings: Return of the King with full orchestra & choir, was rather amazing. I shall go see what is on when at Opernhaus Zurich and figure out what to go to.
