I am viewing a place to rent in Opfikon. Does anyone live in or know the area and could give me a quick run-down of what it's like, having never been before.
I notice that it is smack bang at the end of the runway of the airport so I guess it's going to be a little noisy at times?
I stayed at the NH in Opfikon for the first 3 weeks of November. The planes' departure flight path is directly over the hotel, but it's really quiet at night.
Opfikon is a decent place with a Co-Op, Denner and Migros. The 768 bus takes you straight into Oerlikon, past the train station if you need to go further. The 10 and 14 trams pass through the station also. I did find myself going into Oerlikon a lot for shopping, and even up to the airport for some items.
My other half would have been happy living in Opfikon, but after spending the last 18mths living directly under the flight path from Heathrow, I wanted to get away from that.
Opfikon has a relatively low tax rate, which is a big plus, and in contrast to many other places with low tax rates, the rents are not crazily high either.
I've never lived there myself but been around there quite a lot when I was flat hunting. The population is quite cosmopolitan and tendentially working class, with quite a lot of people being from the Balkans or second generation immigrants. On the whole its unpretentious and friendly and I wouldn't mind living there myself.
Flights come and go between 0600h and 2300h. In bad/foggy weather, they take off and land from the North-West (Hochfelden direction), so you won't even hear them.
Pull up the map on Google. The stretch surrounding Schaffhauserstrasse, between A51 and Opfikon Bahnhof, would be the noisiest in my opinion.
If you're looking at some of the new builds in Glattpark, the insulation keeps most of the noise out. You'll know how much they matter when you leave the windows open.
Id be interested to learn how they came to those measurements. Maybe if you spread the noise over a full day, then it may be 60dB but no way those planes from 6 am on are around 60-70 dB in my area (that is less noise than a motorcycle).
Anyway, still recommending the area if you have good insulation
I love the Opfikon/ Wallisellen region. As someone said earlier in the thread, populace is unpretentious, hardworking, humble. I've been living in the region for about 4 years now and absolutely love it.
