Options to Wash a Large Comforter?

Greetings & Salutations,

We have a king size bed with a rather large comforter that we need to wash. Our washer in our building is quite small and it won't fit in it. I'm guessing that leaving it at a dry cleaners/washers will cost a small fortune and was wondering if there were any self-service laundromats with really big washers and driers that anyone could recommend in the Kusnacht-Erlenbach-Zollikon area?

Any tips appreciated!

Cheers,

Matt

Sorry, I have no info for your area, but to give a bit of an idea of cost, there is a cleaning place near me (looks on the outside like a laundromat but seems to be a drop off place) where the sign outside indicates 35chf fee for cleaning comforters.

If (since?) you have to schlep it out to wash anyhow, perhaps you have a good(ish) friend with a larger washer they'd be willing to let you use in exchange for lunch?

Thanks Peg! What's the name of the place near you that charges the 35 CHF? I'll have to ask around my circle of friends about their washer size (most would prefer some beer in exchange I bet )

Sorry - I maybe should have pointed out that I'm in Basel (a big part of why I dunno what it's like in your area )?

Probably a bit far to travel for the purpose of washing a comforter, but in case it isn't... I do not know the name of the place, but it is on Mülhauserstrasse, around about #73 ish. (Used google maps street view to try to see )

Yeah, my bad - I didn't see you were in Basel. A wee bit far for a wash : )

It is crazy how expensive it can be to wash a comforter or large matelasse bed cover! Just recently, we paid 65 chf for a wash and dry, at our washerei/ dry cleaners.

However, there is an alternative, if you are willing to go into Zūrich. It is:

Leas Waschhaus. There are several machines and one or two with large capacity. If you have the time, it is worth the effort.

From the photos they appear to be Merker machines. They are super.

I use only single size duvets now on all the beds. I can wash them in my own machine and dry them as well.

Very few, and perhaps none- of domestic washing machines could cope with washing a large duvet- not just size, but mainly weight of wet material. Must say I would never lend my washing machine for that purpose, as it could really cause serious damage. Very lucky here that the local Holiday Hostel has industrial washing machines for high weight and high volume- and as my neighbour is the intendant- can occasionally ask her to wash such items. Even at a launderette, you have to insure you only use machine for such purpose- as if it can't cope it will stop, and you will have to call management - they will charge you if you've broken the machine... Our local launderette in the UK had 10 normal machines and 2 for large/heavy loads- but even so, it would not have coped with our super King Size winter duvet- but would be OK for the Summer weight one. So ... just depends on wet weight, rather than size. Our large SK winter duver went to French dry cleaners and cost 25 Euros- so 35 CHF seems fair.

As Doolittle- we know use 2 large single duvets now for our double bed- so can wash our own- and stop fighting over the duvet too

Thank you Susan, Mrs. Doolittle and Odile for the feedback. Will definitely check how large that self-service machine is and give it a go...I think I may get the evil eye if I come home with single duvets : )

you've obviously not been married to the same bloke for 43 years, have you

As said, it is not just about size, but about wet weight (that's the duvet, not the bloke)

If the duvet is down, try to find a liquid detergent that is adapted for down. No softener of course.

You know, I used to hate the idea of not sharing a blanket, but after the (not nearly so many as Odile ) years with my blanket-stealing hubby, I have come to LOVE that we each have our own blanket.

The fact that the 140 x 200 fits in the miniscule washer is an until-now unthought-of bonus actually.

For anyone in Zurich City area, i found a laundrymat with several bank of machines that can handle 6-20kg of laundry --including comforters.

It also has vendo of coun changer and laundry detergents.

Thanks Nita - very helpful to know!
