Hi, in which commune did you/your friend apply? Is it blocking at commune or cantonal level?
I am also in VD and I am planing to apply in 2-3 months. I am wondering if I can start this civil registration process now, or right after my application. It looks like it takes a lot of time to process?
Thanks
My status changed to SchlussprĂŒfung. Here is my complete timeline:
Dec 2024: Application submitted
Feb 2025: Vorprufung
May 2025: Prufung Gemeinde
Oct 2025: Gemeinde BĂŒrgerrecht
Nov 2025: Prufung Kanton
Feb 2026: Prufung Bund, Kanton+Gemeinde invoice
Mar 2026: Received SEM Invoice.
May 2026: Status change to SchlussprĂŒfung
From other post in this and other forums, I estimate that the golden letter is 3-4 months away ![]()
Wow this was really fast! Gemeinde approval in less than one month! ![]()

Do your civil now! Best advice I can give.. wish I had before as well
Which canton was responsible, and how long did you have to wait between the VorprĂŒfung and the GK/interview?
How do you do the civil registration independently of the naturalization application?
You should contact your cantonal civil registry office and apply for an extract from the civil status register. They will explain the specific procedure applicable to your case.
In general, you will need to obtain a recent birth certificate extract (usually issued within the last six months) from your country of birth. Depending on the country, the document may need to be apostilled before being submitted to the civil registry office.
In some cases, additional documents are required, and the cantonal civil registry office may forward the file to the Swiss embassy or consulate in your country of birth for verification. The embassy may conduct detailed checks, which can include contacting the hospital where you were born, verifying records with schools or universities you attended, and speaking with neighbors or other references.
If the verification is successful, the embassy sends its report to the cantonal civil registry office. The office will then notify you once all the necessary information has been received. Before the entry is recorded, you will be asked to review and confirm the details they have on file, such as your name, date of birth, place of birth, and your parentsâ information. Once you approve the information, the entry will be made in the register, and the extract will be issued to you.
If its outside EU (third country) - the entire process can take upto 4 months to a year. In my case it took almost a year. Youâll receive the bill once the extract is issued. It will be around 800-1000 chf.
Kanton ZĂŒrich. My Gemeinde allows to organize the GKT yourself so I did it on my own at an academy soon after applying even before VorprĂŒfung. I then sent the results to the Gemeindeamt to have them included in my dossier. My intention was to remove friction as much a possible and avoid delays with appointments, etc. When the file reached the Gemeinde they confirmed straight away I had fulfilled the language (I have Goethe certificate) and GTK diploma and decision would be taken on the next Gemeinderat meeting. Thereâs no interview in my Gemeinde by default, only the motivation letter you attach to the application. They can however invite you to an interview if there are questions about integration, open debts, etc.
After the SEM authorization, the Canton must recheck everything one more time, including criminal record and things that may have changed since, before formally deciding. Then the executive of the canton has to make an order to award you the citizenship. Then you are sent the invitation to the next available ceremony
Oh, thatâs interesting. Was it in Zurich City? I didnât realize you could take the GKT on your own without receiving an invitation from the Gemeinde. I just checked and it seems to cost CHF 170 if you book the test voluntarily. In Zurich City, however, itâs free when you take it with an invitation from the Gemeinde at the Stadthaus.
Hi, does anyone know how it works if you need to do work travel during the process? Clearly you need to live here during the time (wording for Vaud below), but how would it work if there is a project overseas (but close enough that you can come back for a weekend or week or two a month) that youâve been asked to work on? i.e. could you work overseas for 2 weeks a month/rent a place for those 2 weeks a month?
âRĂ©sider effectivement et ĂȘtre prĂ©sent-e (hormis vacances) en Suisse pendant toute la durĂ©e de la procĂ©dure et dans le canton de Vaud jusquâĂ la fin de la procĂ©dure communaleâ
Not ZĂŒrich City. I did it at Bildungswerkstatt ZĂŒrich for CHF 145. I donât know if my Gemeinde would have paid for it had they booked the appointment, I just wanted to do it in advance to prevent any delays, which has worked out nicely ![]()
Thanks for the info. So the application needs to be approved by the conseil dâĂ©tat too. Could it be that the current delay is due to debacles happening right now within the conseil dâĂ©tat of Vaud? ![]()
Can you please share if there is any progress?
Sorry, no progress. Everyone left for the day and with the World Cup starting soon, donât expect anything soon.
